I gave Lilith a displeased look, my lips tightening as I stared down at her still kneeling on the floor.
‘Then your concept of family is quite twisted, I said sharply, my tone laced with contempt.
There had to be something wrong with her if she believed that sleeping with her sister’s husband was a way of “forming a family.”
Lucas was visibly shocked to see Lilith. His head snapped in her direction, and the moment he recognized her, his expression shifted from frustration to disbelief. He hadn’t brought anyone to the event, he hadn’t expected Lilith to appear.”
He had come alone for a reason. Days before the gala, Lilith had begged him to take her as his escort, trying to convince him that appearing together would help restore their public image.
But Lucas had refused.
He knew exactly what people would say if they saw the two of them together. Whispers would spread through the gala like wildfire. People would gossip about how quickly Lilith had replaced me, how I had always been the obstacle between them.\
Lucas hadn’t wanted to feed that fire.
He believed that keeping his distance could lessen the damage. At the very least, avoiding Lilith in public might prevent further tension between us.
But now, here she was, kneeling in front of me, pleading while drawing attention.
“Lilith? What the hell are you doing here?” Lucas asked, his voice low but sharp as he stepped forward and grabbed her by the arm to pull her up.”
She looked up at him with glassy eyes, her lips trembling as she clung to his arm.”
“I came because I knew you’d be here,” she said in a broken whisper, making no move to stand. Her voice, though soft, carried just enough desperation to catch the attention of nearby guests.”
Lucas gritted his teeth, trying to keep his voice steady. “You’re making a scene. Get up.“}
“No,” she whimpered. “Please, don’t push me away. Just let me stay.””
He bent slightly, lowering his voice in an effort to reason with her.”
“Lilith, please. This isn’t the place. People are watching.”
She shook her head stubbornly, still clutching his arm. “I don’t care. Let them see. Let them all know how much I love you.“}
“This is not the time for this, Lilith. If you keep going like this, I will cut you off completely. I am already married to Selene. I have nothing to do with you anymore,” he muttered, tugging her arm again.
But she clung tighter, her body limp and heavy, as if determined to make it impossible for him to move her. His words only seemed to fuel her resolve to cause a greater scene.”
“Stop pulling me! You’re hurting me,” she cried, her voice loud enough now to draw more attention.”
Several guests began glancing over, their expressions curious, brows raised in recognition. The murmurs started, low and spreading, as the crowd subtly shifted to witness the unfolding drama.
“Please, Selene,” Lilith cried, suddenly grabbing the hem of my dress. Her voice rose an octave, trembling with emotion I didn’t
believe for a second.”
“I love him. I truly do. How could you bear separating us? How could you keep us apart when we’ve loved each other for so long?“”
“Lilith, stop this,” Lucas hissed, his gaze darting around at the growing audience. “You’re making a scene and dragging Selene into this. This isn’t fair to her.“”
“You said you loved me!” she suddenly screamed, still on her knees, her voice shrill and cracking. “That night you slept with me, you said you loved me more than Selene! You said that even after your years of marriage, you’d still choose me in the end! Are you saying you lied?“\
Lucas’s face twisted in frustration. He turned toward me and saw the disgust on my of her arm and stepped back, his voice rising.”
Ce. Shame colored his features as he let go
“I never said that! That was all in your head! You’re delusional. Stand up now! Or I will drag you out myself.“N
“No! I won’t listen to you!” Lilith screamed back. “You’re only saying that because you don’t want to cause problems between our families! But I know the truth! You’re just forced to pretend! I’ll make Selene understand. I won’t leave, not until she understands!”
Her desperate voice echoed in the hallway. More people had gathered now, whispering, pointing.
“Isn’t that Lilith?”
“Lilith and Lucas? Weren’t they childhood sweethearts?”
“Yes, everyone thought they’d end up together.“”
“Right? I was confused why Lucas didn’t marry Lilith and suddenly ended up with that adopted woman five years ago.“N
Their words cut through the air. They didn’t know the truth. All they saw was a weeping Lilith and a stunned Lucas. In their eyes, I was the outsider, the intruder who had come between two people destined to be together.
“No one ever explained why Lucas married Selene,” someone muttered.”

“Maybe she did something to break them up. I heard she’s really close to Ulysses now. She arrived with him, not Lucas.“%
“Exactly. And look at her gown, it’s expensive and flashy. And Lucas? He looks like he’s barely hanging on. His company’s failing, right?%
“Ungrateful. That’s what she is. Lilith’s family raised her like one of their own, and she still stole everything from them.”
“Shameful,” another voice added. “Look at how she’s just standing there, looks cold, unaffected.“%
“You’d think she’d at least act civil. She and Lucas were never a good match anyway.“%
The murmurs became quiet judgments, piling onto my shoulders. None of them cared about the truth. To them, I was the villain.”
Lilith, emboldened by their sympathy, sniffled louder and lifted her tear–filled eyes to me. Her lower lip trembled. Her voice cracked.
“I know I’ve made mistakes, Selene. I know I don’t deserve forgiveness. But how can you just stand there and watch us suffer? We love each other. You can see that, can’t you? And still, you get in the way.“”
My jaw clenched. My fingers curled at my sides.\
“We both know what happened,” I said through gritted teeth. “We both know why that marriage happened. Don’t twist it now.“}]
But Lilith only tilted her head, eyes glistening with fake sorrow.”
“I do know. And I regret it. But I won’t stay silent anymore. I want to be with Lucas. I won’t keep pretending.“}}
“Stop it,” Lucas barked, his voice no longer hushed. He turned toward the spectators and snapped, “What are you all staring at? Disperse! This isn’t your entertainment.”
Then he turned back to Lilith and hissed, “You’re always making trouble everywhere you go!“}]
Lilith ignored him, still clutching the hem of my dress, refusing to stand. Her pitiful act intensified.”
“Selene, you know how much I love Lucas. And after what happened between us, I wanted to apologize. So just come back to Lucas. Blame me. I can take it. I just can’t stand by and watch him fall, especially not because of you.“}]
I opened my mouth, ready to end this pathetic charade once and for all but before I could speak, another voice sliced through the tension.
Catelyn had arrived.”
“You really are a homewrecker, Selene. Destroying families is what you do best.“}
