Lilith lunged, her knife glinting beneath the flickering bulb, her face twisted in manic delight. I kicked, twisted, tried to knock the chair sideways, but it was bolted to the floor. It never budged, no matter how long I struggled.”
I tried to scream for help, but after staying here for days, I already knew that this place was isolated. No matter how loudly I screamed or how much noise I made, no one would hear me. Even if Lilith killed me right now, no one would come to check.
“It’s really good to see you this desperate,” she chuckled, her eyes red with undisguised fury.”
I could see it, she wanted my blood. She wanted me to bleed, to suffer, to vanish from a world she believed should never have given me anything.”
“Stop struggling!” she shrieked. “No one is coming for you!“>
The blade slashed through the air, grazing my arm. Pain shot through me, sharp and immediate. I cried out. She laughed at the first strike, clearly enjoying the sight of my blood. She seemed addicted to it, deliberately making small slashes on my skin just to watch my reactions.
I fought harder, jerking against the restraints until my wrists burned raw, my breaths turning into shallow gasps. Panic twisted in my chest the longer it went on.”
My determination only seemed to enrage her more.
Lilith’s eyes were wide and dilated, gleaming with unhinged hatred. Her lipstick was smeared across her cheek, her hair falling in wild tangles. She was beautiful in a way that made my skin crawl. She crouched in front of me, her face just inches from mine, the knife’s tip dancing in the air between us.”
“You thought you won. Everyone always thinks you win. But not this time, Selene. Not this time.”
Then she raised the knife, and this time, aimed directly at my heart. One stab would be enough to kill me. And she knew it.” But just as the blade began to descend, hurried footsteps echoed from outside.}
“Lilith, stop!”
Lucas burst into the room, his eyes wide with horror, arms raised in a plea. He was out of breath, as though he’d run the whol His tie was askew, jacket half–buttoned, but his voice rang with sharp authority.”
way.
Lilith spun around, the knife still poised. Her chest heaved with rage. Her pupils were blown wide with fury, and her voice trembled with madness.
“You always ruin everything,” she whispered. “You always choose her.”
“I’m not choosing anyone,” Lucas said carefully, inching forward. “Just put the knife down. We can fix this. No one has to get hurt.”}
Her lips quivered. “Liar,” she hissed. “You never looked at me the way you looked at her. Even now… even now, you’re not worried about me. It’s her. Always her. Why does she get to be loved?“!
Tears welled up in her eyes, but they didn’t soften her expression, they made it worse. A sob burst from her chest as she staggered back.
“I was there,” she cried. “I stood beside you when she left! I was ready to pick up the pieces and build something with you! I told myself this time, I wouldn’t be blind. That I would finally have you. But you still want her, even after your bond broke, even after the whole world knows you’re divorced!“}
Lucas reached toward her, slowly. “Lilith, please-”
“No!” she screamed, her voice cracking. “I won’t let you have her again! Not after everything I gave up!”
She raised the knife higher, this time to finish the job. Her scream tore through the room, raw and animalistic.”
Then came a sharp pop. And a dull thud.”
Lilith collapsed, the knife clattering to the floor beside her.
A tranquilizer dart stuck out from her shoulder, quivering slightly. In the doorway, a tall man in black silently lowered a tranquilizer gun, then stepped back into the shadows.
Silence blanketed the room.
I gasped for air, heart still pounding as Lucas rushed to my side. He knelt down and began untying the ropes by shaking hands, muttering apologies under his breath. My arms were numb, my skin slick with sweat, but once I was free, I pushed him away.”
“Don’t touch me,” I snapped, my voice hoarse.
Lucas froze. Then slowly sat back on his heels, looking empty.”
“I don’t love you anymore,” I whispered. “I hate you. I wish I’d never met you or married you. It would’ve been better if I never accepted that substitute contract. I hate you so much.”
He didn’t respond. My words struck him hard. I saw the pain flicker across his face, but his silence was unsettling.”
I looked around the dim room. The walls were old, stained with age, the air thick with the odor of mold. The only light came from a bare bulb overhead, flickering weakly as if unsure it should stay on.”
Then, suddenly, he laughed, as if he had won something.”
I eyed him warily, trying to put more distance between us, but he didn’t stop me. It was as if he didn’t care whether I escaped now

Lucas reached into his jacket and pulled out a small device. He pressed a button, and a video began to play.
I stared at the screen. The quality was crisp. The lighting was luxurious, the crowd extravagant. At the center stood Ulysses. He wore a suit I’d never seen before, looking sharp and powerful, and standing beside him is…
Catelyn.”
Flashes popped as the cameras captured them. They smiled at the crowd. A silver ring gleamed on her hand.
My heart dropped.”
“An engagement party,” Lucas said softly, his eyes locked on mine, madness flickering in their depths. “While you were tied to a chair, your man was getting engaged to his childhood sweetheart. The summit? It became their grand reveal, their show of affection.”
The room spun.
I blinked, hoping it was a trick, a trap. But the image didn’t fade. Ulysses stood there, his arm around Catelyn’s waist, his expression unreadable. Distant. Cold.
His eyes…
I couldn’t tell what they were saying.”
“Why are you showing me this?” Lasked, my voice trembling.
Lucas’s answer was barely above a whisper.
“Because maybe now… you’ll finally see. No one loves you more than I do.“}]
