Tiffany burst out laughing at my action, and Damien raised an eyebrow, a complex swirl of emotions in his eyes, unreadable.
My mother received immediate medical attention. She lay in the ICU for a week, barely clinging to life, before finally pulling through.
Learning she was out of danger, a wave of immense relief washed over me. The tension that had gripped me for days finally began to ebb.
But the moment I relaxed, I couldn’t get up.
Illness struck like a landslide.
When I opened my eyes again, Dasion was beside my hospital bed.
There seemed to be a hint of worry in his brows, but I dismissed it as my imagination.
At this point, I didn’t care what his attitude towards me was.
As if sensing my indifference, Damien frowned in annoyance.
“What’s with that look? Are you blaming me?”
If I listened closely, there was even a hint of indignation in his tone.
I still ignored him.
“I wouldn’t dare.”
Damien suddenly took a step closer, his eyes red–rimmed as he seized my wrist.
“Evelyn, this is nothing! Compared to everything I’ve sacrificed for you, what is this? What’s wrong? You said you loved me, didn’t you? Is your so–called love really so fragile?”
His words hit me like a blow, leaving me reeling. A sudden realization began to dawn on me.
Since my rebirth, Damien’s attitude towards me had been completely out of character. I had initially dismissed it, thinking that the gears of fate couldn’t turn in exactly the same way across two lifetimes, and his behavior was simply a result of different circumstances.
Now, it seemed, I was wrong.
The thought slipped out before I could stop it. “Damien Thorne, did you… did you also reborn?”
Damien froze, his eyes widening in surprise. He coldly flung my hand away.
“What nonsense are you spouting? I think you’ve lost your mind!”
With that, he turned and walked away without a backward glance.
I watched his retreating back, deep in thought.
Forget it.
Whether he did or not.
It didn’t matter anymore.
In three days, our paths would no longer cross.
A nurse took me for a full body check–up, saying Damien had ordered it.
I didn’t refuse.
The next morning, the nurse suddenly rushed into my room, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
“Ms. Price, your test results are in! Congratulations, you’re going to be a mother!”
I froze, my mind struggling to process her words.
Seeing my confusion, the nurse explained, “Ms. Price, I’ve confirmed with the doctor. You are indeed pregnant, almost two months along! Haven’t you always wanted a child? Congratulations, your wish has come true!”
I was still reeling.
“But… didn’t the doctors say I couldn’t have children anymore?”
That night in the pouring rain, when Damien abandoned me in the outskirts for Tiffany, I walked for hours through the storm. Cold, the roads
slick, I slipped and fell into a lake the baby, and the doctors said I’d sustained irreversible damage, that I might never conceive again.
The truth was cruel, but I had no ch
but to accept it.
I never imagined that at this very moment, I would find myself pregnant with Damien Thorne’s child.
Fate truly played a cruel trick!
“There are always exceptions, aren’t there? Perhaps this child is a gift from above, Ms. Price. This time, you really must be careful!”
I sat there in a daze all day, my mind a battleground of conflicting emotions.
By nightfall, I finally made my decision.
I would keep this baby.
No matter what had happened between Damien and me, the child was innocent.
But I never, ever imagined that shortly after making this decision, I would be injected with anesthesia and dragged into an operating room.
I couldn’t move an inch, but my mind was terrifyingly clear.
Someone was whispering beside my ear.
“Looks like Mr. Thorne still cares most about Ms. Reed. Both his wife and Ms. Reed were found to be pregnant, and he ordered us to perform an abortion on his wife without a second thought, just so Ms. Reed wouldn’t be upset!”
“Isn’t that right? It seems in Mr. Thorne’s eyes, his ‘official‘ wife isn’t even worth a strand of Ms. Reed’s hair. Being the main wife and treated like this, it’s just humiliating!”
My eyes were closed, but tears streamed endlessly down my face,
A desolate sadness filled me. The helpless struggle of just hours ago now felt like a cruelj
Joke
As cold instruments moved within me, the heart that once beat for Damien Thorne was finally shattered, beyond repair.
I regretted it.
Regretted ever loving Damien Thorne.
The torture finally ended. I was wheeled out of the operating room, the anesthesia slowly wearing off.
Just as I was about to fully wake, I felt someone standing beside me, watching me.
It was Damien.
I kept my eyes closed, unsure of what he wanted.
Suddenly, something soft pressed against my forehead.
He kissed me.
Damien stroked my face, and I thought I heard him sigh.
“Evelyn, this is the last time. The very last time I’ll hurt you. Just pass this final test, and I promise, I will love you truly and wholly from now on.”
