With him, everything was always taken care of. All I ever had to do was follow his lead.
But Isaac…
All I could remember was his hurried back, always rushing away. Even our wedding was something I had to bring up first.
He’d frowned and said, “It’s only been five years–don’t you think it’s too soon to get married?”
So this was the difference between loving and not loving. It was so painfully clear.

Chapter 5
Isaac didn’t contact me for an entire day.
Instead, it was his mother who called first, her tone dripping with superiority.
“You know about Isaac and Vivian, don’t you? Now that Vivian is carrying the Wilcox family’s first grandchild, we absolutely won’t let her be wronged. Isaac must marry her. Honestly, it’s a blessing you and Isaac didn’t get married yesterday. It must be fate!
“I’ve always said you two weren’t right for each other. The Hoffman family has been in business for three generations, while the Wilcox family has practiced medicine for generations. Our families just aren’t compatible, wouldn’t you agree?”
I let out a cold laugh.
“Mrs. Wilcox, Isaac and I have already broken up. If it’s not important, please don’t contact me again.”
There was a stunned silence on the other end–she clearly hadn’t expected me, always so polite, to answer her like that.
Just as she was about to explode, I hung up without hesitation.
She called back several more times.
I blocked her number without a second thought, then blocked every way Isaac could reach me as well.
I deleted every photo of us. Five years of love vanished with them.

The next day, while I was at a jewelry store picking out wedding rings, I ran into Isaac and Vivian by chance.
He was excitedly helping Vivian select a set of extravagant jewelry, even ordering an amulet for their unborn child.
The moment he saw me trying on rings, Isaac’s expression darkened.
“Lori! I told you to go home and think about what you’ve done, and here you are shopping for wedding rings? Do you really think, with this kind of attitude, I’d still marry you?”
He grabbed my hand roughly, yanking the ring off and handing it back to
the sales associate.
“We won’t be buying this. Thank you.”
The diamond edge scraped my finger, and blood immediately welled up.
The sales associate rushed over to help, but Isaac’s voice was cold and
dismissive.
“It’s just a scratch. No need to trouble yourself.”
I ignored him.
Wiping away the blood, I turned to the associate. “Could you please bring me another ring?”
Isaac clamped down on my wrist, his voice rising in anger. “Was I not clear enough? You are not buying a ring today!”
A hush fell over the store as other customers began to whisper.
“That pregnant woman must be his wife, right? The mistress is so bold, coming here to pick out wedding rings in public.”

“Completely shameless. Being a mistress isn’t enough–she wants to be legitimate. No wonder he’s yelling at her.”

Vivian stepped forward, pretending to smooth things over. “Lori, stop making a scene. With all these people watching, it’s embarrassing. Why don’t I give you the ring Isaac just bought me? See if you like it?”
The sales associate chimed in, trying to defuse the situation. “Ma’am, maybe you should come back another day… With all this commotion, we really can’t do business.”
Isaac’s grip tightened, and it looked like he was about to drag me out by force.
I wrenched my arm free.
“Isaac, what business is it of yours if I buy a wedding ring? Mind your own business!”
“Not my business? Fine. I’m officially calling off our engagement. You’ll never need to buy a wedding ring again!”
With that, he shoved me hard.
Just as I stumbled, about to fall, a pair of steady hands caught me.
Austin’s voice came from right beside me.
“Wifey, sorry I’m late.”
