Elena? Elena has been abroad for so many years. There was no one there for her, and when she finally came home, you, as her sister–in–law, did this to her?”
I rubbed my forehead, feeling the whole conversation ridiculous. “What did I do to her?”
Seeing my bewildered look, she was furious. Alex Caldwell’s angry voice was heard from outside the door. “Victoria, are you still trying to weasel out of this?”
Alex, who was supposed to be out of town discussing a project, walked in holding Elena.
My sister–in–law huddled in his arms, wearing only a white tank top and shorts, with her thighs and shoulders exposed. Her arms were wrapped around his neck, and she was crying.
“Mom, Alex, don’t be so hard on Victoria. It was all me. I wasn’t good enough…”
Elena’s obedient and aggrieved appearance further fueled the anger in my husband and mother–in–law.
Alex lifted Elena’s arm, which was covered with a ring of red bruises and there was a dog chain on her wrist.

Now that she can’t make it abroad, she returned home in disgrace. And this happened to me as soon as she returned.

Before I could ask clearly, Margaret had already started wiping away tears. “Elena, I know that you have had a hard time these past years and you’re still trying to protect your cruel sister–in–law to keep our family at peace. As she said that, he glared at Alex fiercely. “It’s all because of you that you got this woman to be your wife, and now your sister has to suffer like this. What do you say we should do?”
