Chapter 16
After two days of monitoring at the hospital to ensure his fever wouldn’t relapse, Lucas was finally discharged and brought back home.
Back at Sterling Place, the living room was a mess–piled high with Sophia Bennett’s belongings.
She stood in stilettos, clinging desperately to Ethan’s sleeve, her manicured nails digging into his arm.
“Ethan, you can’t do this to me!” Her voice trembled, eyes brimming with frantic tears. “We’ve known each other for twenty years. You’re really going to throw that away over something this…. minor?”
“Minor?” Ethan yanked his arm free, his tone cold enough to freeze the air.
“You think hurting my children is no big deal?”
He pulled out his phone and tapped into the home security feed.
The screen lit up with footage of Sophia gripping Lily’s thigh hard enough to bruise, the little girl silently sobbing in pain.
“And this one.” He swiped again–this time, a video of Sophia pouring sleeping pills into the kids‘ milk.
“You drugged them just so you could sneak out to a party. You really thought I wouldn’t find out?”
Sophia’s face turned ghost–white. “You… you were spying on me? You never trusted me at all, did you?”
“I was watching my house.” Ethan’s voice was low and dangerous.
At that moment, a maid suddenly stepped forward. Her voice shook. “Mr. Caldwell… there’s something you should know.”
She pointed at Sophia, disgust plain on her face.
“From the first day she ever stepped foot in this house, she’s been trying to drive a wedge between the kids and Mrs. Caldwell.”
“You’re lying!” Sophia screamed.
“I’m not!” the maid shot back, braver now. “She’d buy the kids toys and candy when Mrs. Caldwell wasn’t around, then tell them their mom didn’t love them because she wouldn’t let them have sweets.”
“I heard her tell Lucas, ‘Your mom doesn’t want you to be happy.‘”
“She even said, ‘If you want me to stay, you’ve got to help get rid of your mom.‘ The next day, Lucas pushed Mrs. Caldwell down the stairs.”
Ethan’s face darkened. “Pull the footage. Now.”
When the clip began to play on the living room screen, the entire room fell deathly silent.
There they were–Lucas and Lily, smirking as they shoved Emily down the stairs.
And right after, Sophia walked in, saw it all… and smiled.
A slow, satisfied smile.
“Daddy…” Lily’s sob broke through the silence as she ran down the stairs and threw herself into Ethan’s arms.
“We’re sorry… We want Mommy back…”
Lucas followed behind, tear–streaked and shaking. “Miss Bennett said Mommy didn’t want us anymore. Is that true?”
Sophia sneered. “Of course it’s true. She’s long gone. Probably shacked up with some man by now.”
She turned toward Ethan. “Oh, by the way–you remember that contract you signed? That wasn’t a real estate deal. That was the divorce papers Emily herself had drawn up. You’ve been legally divorced for weeks.”
“You’re the one who drove her away.”
SLAP.
The sound rang out like a gunshot.
Ethan’s hand was still raised in the air, his eyes blazing.
“Get her out,” he ordered the house staff, voice low and furious. “Anything I paid for? She doesn’t take a single thing.”
Sophia clutched her cheek, staring at him like she couldn’t believe what she’d just heard. “Ethan! You’re seriously tossing me out over that plain old

housewife?”
“Shut your mouth!” Ethan roared, the ice in his eyes sharper than ever.
“Say one more word, and I’ll make sure you never work another party in Sterling Heights again.”
