Chapter 19
Ethan’s private jet touched down in Willow Creek later that same day. The summer sun glared down as he stepped onto the tarmac, squinting against the brightness while his children were gently lifted down by security staff.
“Daddy, are we really gonna see Mommy?” Lily looked up, her voice trembling with hope.
“We are,” Ethan replied, adjusting his blazer, his tone calm and resolute. “She’ll be happy to see you.”
His assistant hurried over with a folder. “Mr. Caldwell, we’ve confirmed her location. She’s at a ceramics studio on the east side of town. She’s with…
them.”
Inside the folder was a photo. Emily knelt beside a little girl, carefully wiping clay from her cheek, a soft smile curving her lips. Standing beside her was a tall man in glasses – Nathan Brooks.
The three of them, bathed in soft light streaming through a window, looked like a family.
Ethan’s hand clenched around the photo, crinkling its edge.
That look in Nathan’s eyes…. he knew it all too well. It was the kind of look he’d never given her–tender, open, safe.
“Get the car,” Ethan said flatly. “We’re going now.”
The ride was silent. Lucas and Lily stared out at the unfamiliar city, their hands clutching their shirts, nerves bubbling beneath the surface. Both wore the outfits Emily had bought for them last year–too snug now, but they insisted.
“Daddy… do you think Mommy will forgive us?” Lucas whispered, worry etched across his small face.
Ethan’s throat tightened. He remembered the footage–her body tumbling down the stairs. Her back as she walked out of their lives.
“She will,” he said at last, not sure if he believed it. “Your mom loves you more than anything. She’s just… hurt.”
The car pulled up outside Mud & Flame Ceramics. Through the glass storefront, Ethan spotted her immediately.
Emily was at a pottery wheel, her hair pulled up, wearing a simple white tee and jeans. The sunlight caught her cheek as she laughed, trying to dodge a smear of clay hurled by Ava.
That laugh–light, real–hit Ethan square in the chest.
“Mommy!” Lily suddenly broke free and ran toward the studio.
Ethan moved quickly, following her in. A bell chimed as the door opened.
Emily looked up, her smile freezing the moment she saw them. Her eyes flicked past Lily and landed on Ethan. No joy. Just shock–and something colder.
“Lily? What… what are you doing here? How did you find me?”
Ava shrank back behind her, and Nathan stood, subtly positioning himself in front of them.
“Mommy!” Lucas rushed in behind his sister and flung his arms around Emily’s leg, tears already spilling over. “We missed you so much! You’ve been with them this whole time? You left us… for them?”
His stare cut to Ava, sharp and accusing. The little girl shrank further behind Emily’s side.
Emily’s hands hovered in the air, unsure whether to embrace or retreat. But when she met Lucas’s glare–so like his father’s–it knocked her breath out.
She stepped back.
Her gaze shifted from the children to Nathan, then back to Ethan.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice low and tight.
Ethan stepped forward. His eyes flicked to Nathan, then locked onto hers. “Emily… we’re here to bring you home. This has gone on long enough. The kids know they messed up. It’s time to come back.”
A heavy silence fell over the room.
Nearby customers stopped what they were doing, watching with thinly veiled curiosity.
“Home?” Emily let out a short, bitter laugh. “And where exactly would that be?”
“Mommy, please come back with us,” Lily begged, clutching her hand. “We won’t make you mad again, we promise.”
“Yeah, we made Sophia leave!” Lucas added quickly. “Dad said you’re the only mom we’ll ever have.”

Heiress sacrifices all for husband–then finds his shocking betrayal.
Emily’s face twitched. She crouched down, level with them, her voice barely above a whisper.
“I’m not coming back. Some things… some things can’t be fixed with an apology.”
“Why?” Lily’s tears spilled over. “You don’t love us anymore?”
That question pierced deeper than any accusation.
Emily opened her mouth, then shut it again. Her heart twisted. Not from anger. From pain.
