Elaine gave a perfectly blank, wide–eyed shake of the head. “Grandma, I don’t know what she’s talking about.”
And just like that, Edith’s confidence returned. She glared daggers at Linda.
“You dare lie to my face, you little brat?” yelled Edith. “You are rotten to the core! How did our Preston family have a disgrace like you?”
“Edith!” Eleanor shot to her feet. “You’ve gone too far! Apologize to Linda!”
What kind of grandmother said that to her own granddaughter? To Eleanor, it was way over the line.
Even if the other party was an elder, Eleanor couldn’t take it anymore.
If being a “good daughter–in–law” meant she couldn’t even protect her own daughter, then she’d rather be a bad one. She wasn’t going to let anyone bully her child.
“You want me to apologize to her?” Edith looked at her like she’d lost her mind.
Even Charles, the head of the household, had to defer to her. Had Eleanor gone crazy?
To Edith, before Linda came back, everything in the Preston family had been peaceful. Ever since she returned, it had been nothing but chaos.
Linda couldn’t be allowed to stay! Thought Edith.
“Yes. I’m telling
you to apologize to Linda!” Eleanor stood her ground.
“You’ve lost your mind! That girl’s cast some kind of spell on you!” yelled Edith.
“I’ve never been more clear–headed!” Eleanor’s voice was sharp with fury. “I won’t let anyone bully my daughter. Not even you! You’ve gone way too far today. Apologize–right now!”
Edith went speechless. Linda’s gaze turned frosty. She held her mother’s hand tightly.
“Mrs. Preston, if I’m not lying- -then will you apologize
to me?”

Eleanor was so furious that even her hands were trembling,
If anyone else had dared to curse at her precious daughter like that, she wouldn’t have cared about manners or upbringing–she would’ve slapped them right across the face.
She only asked for an apology because Edith was an elder, but this was her bottom line.
“Fine!” Edith trusted her sweet granddaughter, Elaine, one hundred percent. She nodded almost without hesitation.
“Grandma…” For some reason, Elaine suddenly felt uneasy, her heart pounding erratically.

“Drama Queen Elaine, are you satisfied with this wager?” Linda’s sharp gaze landed on Elaine again.
Elaine’s heart leapt with joy.

“Linda, don’t do this. I told you–don’t make a bet with Grandma.”
“Linda, don’t-” Eleanor tried to intervene.
She had no problem with the wager. But not if it was about whether Linda could stay in the Preston family!
“Linda, prove to me you weren’t lying!” Afraid that Linda would change her mind, Edith quickly cut Eleanor off.
