Chapter 21
Linda sneered, “So eager to apologize, Mrs. Preston?”
Edith glared at her. “You’ve got a sharp tongue, but that’s useless. I’m not falling for it! If you can’t prove you weren’t lying, then get out of the Preston family!”
Linda gave a cold laugh and didn’t bother arguing. She reached into her hoodie pocket, pulled out her phone, and played a recording.
Elaine’s soft voice came through the speaker.
“Linda, can I ask you something? Can you please give Jasper back to me?” asked Elaine in the speaker.
“Ever since I was a child, I knew I’d marry him when I grew up. So I love him—I really can’t lose him. As long as you return Jasper to me, I’ll give up
anything for you.”
“Anything?” this was Linda’s voice.
“Anything,” replied Elaine.
“Deal. Then give me back my room,” said Linda.
Mrs. Preston turned to stare at Elaine in shock. Elaine had even lied to her?
Elaine’s face went completely pale. She bit her lip hard.
She didn’t expect Linda to record it. Now she was the one caught lying.
Elaine was so stunned, she even forgot to explain herself to Edith. Seeing their expressions, Linda calmly put her phone away.
A mocking smile tugged at her lips.
“Linda, you
traded your engagement to Jasper for a room with Elaine?” Eleanor was also shocked by the recording.
Among all the heiresses in Southport, which one didn’t see Jasper as their dream man?
When Linda came back and told her she liked Jasper and wanted to marry him, Eleanor wasn’t surprised at all.
She had watched Jasper grow up–he was outstanding since childhood, a cut above the rest. It was only natural for Linda to fall for him.
This morning, when Linda said she wanted to break off the engagement, Eleanor had thought it was just a fit of anger, stirred up by Edith.
But hearing her conversation with Elaine–she was serious? How did she suddenly change her mind like that?
Linda patted the agitated Eleanor comfortingly. “Mom, that’s not the point.”
“Then what is the point?” Eleanor frowned.
Trading a room just to spite Elaine–that was absurd. She didn’t want Linda to make a reckless decision she’d regret.
“Linda, you’re not allowed to break off the engagement with Jasper,” said Eleanor.
“Mom, can we talk about that later?” Linda wasn’t surprised by Eleanor’s reaction at all.
Not just Eleanor–even Charles was very satisfied with Jasper as a future son–in–law.
But what happened afterward?
Now, Jasper really wasn’t the point anymore. Before Eleanor could say anything else, Linda’s sharp gaze cut back to Edith.
“Well, Mrs. Preston, wasn’t it your beloved granddaughter who begged me? So do me a favor–apologize. Right. Now.”
Edith’s eyes bulged in fury. She stood up, trembling, leaning on her cane. “You wretched girl! You actually dare to ask me to apologize?”
“Apologize.” Linda’s face was expressionless. What was there not to dare?
Elaine finally snapped out of it. She quickly supported Edith, looking at Linda disapprovingly.
“Linda, Grandma’s still your elder. How can you ask her to apologize to someone younger? I’ll apologize to you, okay?”
