When Simon arrived at Laila’s ward with evidence and witnesses, Mom was feeding her. Dad stood by, his face full of tender affection.
As soon as he saw Simon barge in with a group of people, he frowned. “Simon, why are you bringing so many people in here? Laila just had surgery, and she needs to rest. All of you, get out!”
He stepped forward to push them out, but Simon stood firm, eyes locked on him. “Did you forget about your other daughter?”
My parents froze for a moment, as if they had only just remembered me.
Dad looked away sheepishly. “What about her? She lost a kidney. She’s much stronger than Laila, so she’ll be fine.”
“Laila’s still weak, so she needs our attention more,” Mom chimed in. “Zora’s more mature now. I’m sure she’ll understand.”
Simon let out a bitter laugh. “No wonder Zora’s life was so miserable. You’re so blatantly biased! You treat Laila like a princess while treating Zora like a slave. You don’t deserve to be her parents at all!”
Enraged, Mom sprang to her feet and jutted her finger at him. “Biased? You have no idea what Zora did! Five years ago, she nearly killed her own father and tried to frame her sister!
“After all the vile things she did, we still took her back. We just chose to focus our love on the daughter who actually suffered. How does that make us unfit as parents?”
But Simon didn’t back down. “And how are you so sure Zora was lying?” he asked, enunciating each word as he stared right into her eyes. “Did you ever bother to check the truth?”
