Chapter 3
I lay on the ground, warm blood trickling from my forehead.[]
Kai’s expression shifted slightly, and he was about to step forward when Celeste laughed softly.
“Sis, are you gonna play the victim again?“]
These words instantly made Kai stop in his tracks, disgust spreading across his face. “Let’s go. She brought this on herself.”
I lay on the cold floor unable to move, every joint in my body feeling like it had been broken. Old wounds not yet healed, new injuries added on top–I couldn’t tell which hurt more, my heart or my body.[]
I stayed like that until late at night when two maids finally found me and rushed me to the hospital.[]

the way, I vaguely heard their conversation:[]
“Young Master Harrington took Miss shopping for bags again.“[]
“Yeah, her walk–in closet’s getting too full. We’ll need to organize everything when they get back.” As my supposed personal doctor, he didn’t even care if I lived or died, but went shopping for bags with another woman?]
Sharp pain shot through my chest as I smiled bitterly and closed my eyes.[]
Half–asleep, I heard the hospital room door creak open.[]
I heard Kai giving quiet instructions in the room. “Tomorrow’s date with Celeste–get that best custom suit ready, and pick out some million–dollar jewelry for her.“[]
I kept my eyes shut, not moving a muscle.
After getting discharged, I made a call to a number I hadn’t used in agès…
When I got home and pushed open the door, the scene before me made me freeze completely–everything Mom had left behind was
gone.
“Sis!” Celeste stood in the doorway smiling. “Sorry! I had no idea you’d hurt yourself that bad this time.“[]
Ryan stood nearby with a cold smirk. “Quit the act.“[]
“Where’s my mom’s stuff?” My voice shook.[]
“Those old things?” Celeste tilted her head. “I saw you clinging to that junk all the time, getting more and more depressed, so I helped you out and burned it all.“]
“Who gave you the right!” I instantly raised my voice.[]
“I did!” Dad came over carrying a baseball bat. “Your mom’s been dead for like 10 years, and you’re still clutching that pile of trash! I think you’ve lost your damn mind!“]
Hearing this, I couldn’t hold back anymore. “You know exactly how she died! If it wasn’t for you and Celeste’s mom…“[]
SHUT UP!”
The baseball bat suddenly hit me hard, and I hurt too much to speak.]

Chapter 3
I rushed out the door, straight into the pouring rain.
Dad’s vicious face from earlier wouldn’t leave my mind–if he hadn’t been fooling around with Linda back then, Mom wouldn’t have gone out in the rain looking for him, and she wouldn’t have died in that car accident!]
And what did my father do? He turned around and welcomed Linda and her daughter Celeste right into our home.
My hatred grew thicker, and I wandered the streets like a walking corpse, unconsciously ending up at the old street Mom used to bring me to. I found a dumpster and curled up beside it for the whole night.[]
At dawn, a Bentley pulled up at the corner.[]
The window rolled down, showing Kai’s profile.[]
Kai pulled out a yellowed photo from his pocket. The girl in it wore a white dress with a bright smile–it was Celeste. He remembered how, in this very dark alley, a girl in a white dress had saved him from some thugs.]
He tucked the photo away and told his driver, “Keep watch. Celeste should be here soon.

Hearing “Celeste,” I let out a self–mocking laugh. Like he’d ever be here for me.]]
Kai waited from morning till night, but Celeste never showed.[]
As darkness fell, Kai made a call from his car, sounding kind of down. “Celeste, I waited all day–how come you didn’t show up…“]]
On the other end, Celeste sounded like she’d just woken up. “Oh, my sister went missing, and the house is a total mess…”[]
Kai hung up and suddenly noticed me watching.
He strode over and grabbed my wrist. “What the hell are you doing here?!”
“Let go!” I struggled.]]
“You’re coming with me!” His face was dark. “The Ashworth house is in chaos because of your bullshit!“[]
“Our contract expires tomorrow,” I finally yanked free. “My business isn’t your problem anymore.“[]
His expression froze for a second, then he got all aggressive. “There’s still 24 hours left, and I’m still your personal doctor now. You’re emotionally unstable–you’re coming with me.“]
His phone suddenly rang, cutting him off.[]
He stepped aside, deliberately lowering his voice.[]
“Young Master Harrington, your 15–carat engagement ring is ready. Please come and…“]
When he hung up, all that darkness in his expression vanished, replaced by pure joy he couldn’t hide. “I’ve got something urgent. Get home by yourself.”
Whenever it involved Celeste, I was always the one who got sacrificed and thrown away.
After Kai left, my phone exploded with news alerts.
I stared at the screen, my breathing stopping cold.[]
