Chapter 7
Fine snow began falling from the Swiss sky.[]
I walked alone through the cemetery path, holding a black umbrella.
At Mom’s headstone, I gently brushed away the snow, revealing her gentle smile.[]
Three months ago, I’d paid a fortune to hire the most professional fake death company, leaving carefully planted “evidence” behind just to completely escape that place that never felt like home.[]
Mom’s urn was carefully packed in my suitcase and brought to this country she loved most.[]
Before she died, she quietly told me a secret–she’d left me a trust fund worth hundreds of millions in a Swiss bank. And that so–called father would never know about it.[]
The photo on my new passport showed my favorite version of myself, with a smile of new beginnings at the corners of my mouth.[]
I changed my identity and recovered at Swiss’s best hospital. My broken bones gradually healed, and so did the wound in my heart.[]
Sometimes I’d check the news back home and heard the Ashworth family had gone bankrupt, and Kai and Celeste still hadn’t gotten married.
But none of that concerned me anymore.[]
Until that day when the fake death company called.]
“Miss Ashworth… there’s something I need to tell you.” The voice sounded hesitant.[]
I went inside and closed my umbrella. “Speak.“[]
He sighed. “Your family went bankrupt recently. Your brother’s been drowning his sorrows in alcohol every day, and a few days ago he was diagnosed with kidney failure. Seems like he’d had problems for a while… Anyway, Miss, now he needs a kidney transplant…“[]
I cut him off. “What about my dad’s kidney?“]]
“Mr. Ashworth took a fall a while back and had a stroke. He’s bedridden at home now and can’t donate a kidney…”
After hanging up, I stood by the window in silence for a long time.[]
Finally, I pulled out a coin and placed it gently in my palm. “Mom, you decide for me, okay?”

During the eight–hour flight, I never closed my eyes.
The hospital corridor was quiet in the dead of night. When I pushed open the room door, Ryan was sleeping.
The sound of the door opening woke him up. He jerked his head up, and when he saw it was me, his whole body began shaking violently. “Sis!“]
He tried to struggle up, but I gently pressed him down. “Don’t move. Lie still.“]

Tears immediately poured from his eyes. “Sis, thank God, you’re not dead!“]
Maybe from being too emotional, he started coughing violently.[]
I gently patted his back, like when I used to comfort him to sleep as children.[]
In the end, I couldn’t harden my heart to watch him who shared my blood die.[]
The compatibility results went smoothly.

he knelt before me, sobbing hysterically.
“Sis, I’m sorry. I know I was wrong. Dad’s unable and confused now–please don’t leave.“]]
I didn’t answer as they wheeled me into the operating room.[]
The post–surgery recovery days were long and quiet. I leaned against the hospital bed, watching the plane trees outside rustling in the wind.[]
In the hallway, two nurses‘ whispered conversation drifted into the room.
n.[
“That weird Young Master Harrington came again, his hands are all cut up!“]
“Tell me about it. I heard he’s been finding new ways to torture himself every day…”
“Supposedly to atone for his sins? Like he wronged someone important?”
Before they finished talking, the room door was suddenly pushed open.]]
Kai stood in the doorway, his face frighteningly pale.
