Chapter 1
“Ha,” he let out a cold laugh, “fine, don’t come crying to me later.”
“I’m done eating.” I stood up, the chair making a soft scraping sound against the floor.[]
The moment I turned around, I saw Susan peeking in, ready to enter.[]
She didn’t even bother knocking. When she saw me, she just gave me this shallow nod–all business, no warmth.]
But when she turned to look at Dylan, her expression shifted to something almost apologetic.]
“Dylan, Ms. Parker sent over another script, and I can’t decide… maybe you should take a look…”
Dylan looked past her, his eyes landing on me.[]
If this had been before, I would’ve snapped back. What kind of script is so damn important it can’t
an hour for dinner?
But it’s happened too many times. I’m tired.[]
I kept walking but Susan grabbed my arm.[]
“Oh, Miss Emma, I didn’t mean to interrupt,” she paused, like she just realized she’d walked in at the wrong time. “I’m still new to this job, and there’s so much I don’t know, so I have to ask Dylan about everything. I’ll leave right now–please don’t be mad at Dylan because of me. He had such a heavy shooting schedule today, he must be exhausted…“]
I couldn’t hold it in anymore.[]
“Is this your first day working with a celebrity? This dinner was booked three days ago–you didn’t know? Did I force him to have this meal or did I force the director to schedule extra scenes today?]
Oh right, you’re ‘new‘ to being his assistant. So new that when you got sick at 1 AM, instead of going to the hospital, you called him. []
So new that you don’t know his personal schedule is none of your business.
So new that you just happen to show up everywhere we have a date. What is it–you have no friends, not enough work to keep you busy, or you think being our junior from college gives you a free pass to be shameless?“]
་
Susan’s mouth fell open, like she’d been dealt the world’s greatest injustice.]
Even the dim lighting couldn’t hide her eyes welling up with tears. She glanced back at Dylan, then just hung her head.]
“Emma, enough.” Dylan walked over and patted her back, then frowned at me. “You’re going too far It’s just dinner–she’ll know better next time.“]]
Next time…
I’m done having three–person candlelit dinners.
Susan’s tears might have been silent, but her barely contained sobs were crystal clear.
What a waste that she’s not the one acting.
I suddenly found it hilarious.]
Such a tired old trick, yet Dylan–a professional actor–was completely blind to it.[]
