Chapter 24
The assistant’s words made Matteo’s brow furrow tightly.[]
He looked at the flashing police lights below, thinking of that ten–billion acquisition deal, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed his curses: “Fine, I agree to marry you!“[]
In the dead silence, Joannie suddenly laughed.[]
She spread her arms, revealing her maimed fingers: “Matteo, come hug me.“[]
Matteo approached warily.[]
But the moment he reached out, Joannie suddenly lunged at him, her skeletal arms wrapping around his waist like vines.[]
Let’s die together!”
A scream tore through the sky.[]
In the moment of weightlessness, Matteo grabbed the window frame, but Joannie viciously clawed at his eyes with her nails.
Amid the sharp pain, he heard the crisp sound of shattering glass, the roaring of wind in his eardrums, and Joannie’s maniacal laughter.
During the brief seconds of falling, Yunia’s smiling face holding sunflowers flashed through his mind.
“Bang!”
Dark red blood flowed across the ground. Joannie’s twisted body leaked a winding river of blood, and with her pale face, the sight was horrifying.
Matteo lay in the pool of blood, unable to feel his legs, only able to watch helplessly as the ambulance’s flashing lights spun into a blinding halo in his vision.[]
Suddenly the crowd’s screams, police sirens, his assistant’s anxious voice… all gradually faded away in his mind.[]
Only the excruciating pain from his spine reminded him of his remaining consciousness.
But a few minutes later, his remaining consciousness slowly became blurred, and the spine pain gradually dissipated.[]
He felt like he was falling into a huge black hole, his body light as cotton.]
Those noisy sounds that bothered him had all stopped, leaving only his own heartbeat.[]
This was the first time Matteo had heard his own heartbeat, so weak it was almost stopping.
He wanted to open his eyes to look around, but his eyelids felt heavy as they drooped down, and several images suddenly appeared in his mind-
His life began replaying frame by frame in his mind.
His parents both went abroad, leaving him alone to be raised by his grandparents;[]

Matteo’s childhood had almost nothing memorable until his adolescence when he met Yunia.[]
From then on, he fell in love with her at first sight.
But people always get tired, and gradually he began looking for new people.[]
Yet in his mind, there were still only memories of Yunia alone.[]
Fourteen–year–old Yunia being praised by the teacher for excellent homework;[]
Seventeen–year–old Yunia graduating high school, accepting his confession under fireworks;
Twenty–year–old Yunia shyly giving him a ring, and when he asked what it meant, she ran away;[]
Twenty–five–year–old Yunia leaving him alone, with a determination on her face he had never seen before.[]
Watching that figure gradually walking away, something in his heart seemed to be disappearing rapidly, and he was powerless to stop it.
That something was very intangible, yet very important to him.[]
He was so unwilling to let it go.
Was it love for her? Or regret for himself? He couldn’t tell the difference.
Matteo couldn’t figure out what he was really clinging to.
“Matteo.”
He heard someone calling him, so he hurriedly turned around to look.
Yunia suddenly appeared then.[]
More precisely, it was her from two years ago.
Matteo looked at her face and smiled.
When he tried to reach out and grab her, he caught nothing but air. When he turned around again, the figure had vanished.
A drop of scalding tear slowly fell from the corner of his eye.
