By the time I landed and got settled, the drama back home had completely blown up.
Nothing could embarrass those old–money families more than Cynthia literally admitting on video that she was faking everything
My phone was absolutely exploding with messages.
Cynthia was losing her shit.]
“You fucking bitch, I hope you rot in hell!“]
“Happy now that you made me look like a total joke? If you wanted Arthur so bad, why’d you ditch the wedding?”

Word was the Valentines were so embarrassed they dragged her home that same night and took away her phone.
My parents sent a bunch of messages–mostly blaming me but with hints of regret.
But nobody actually thought I was the victim here.
Arthur called while I was talking to my landlord about extending my lease.[]
I picked up without thinking.[]
He was quiet for a few seconds, breathing hard, then started his apology.
“I’m sorry. I had no idea she was faking everything.”
“She admitted she knocked your pills away. I was completely wrong about you.“[
It was pretty rare to hear Arthur actually humble himself like that.
I was feeling pretty good, so I asked what else he wanted to say.]
He probably wasn’t expecting me to react like that. He stumbled around and finally managed, “Where are you? I’ll come get you so we can talk this out.” “0

I wasn’t gonna hide where I was.
If they wanted to find me, they could track me down anyway.[]
Arthur sounded shocked. “You left the New York? When are you coming back?“]
1 said matter of factly, “I’m not.“]
That’s when he started freaking out.

“Why aren’t you coming back? Your parents are still here! You just disappeared without saying anything…“]
I let him finish his whole complain, then replied.]
“My parents don’t fucking love me, and they don’t really want to see me either. Me leaving is probably a relief for them.“]
“If you see them, tell them I said hi.“[]
Before he could get another word out, I hung up.[]
I pulled out my SIM card and tossed it in the trash.]
I was done with all the drama back home.[]
After two days of getting my life together, Arthur showed up at my door looking completely exhausted.
“We need to talk, Lorraine.”
