Chapter 13

“But isn’t general manager a bit much?”

Elizabeth’s fingers trembled slightly as she gripped her phone, the wheels of her suitcase making clicking sounds as they caught on the airport tiles.

Zoe’s hearty laughter came through the phone: “Why would it be too much? Elizabeth, have you forgotten how we teamed up and won the gold prize at the university entrepreneurship competition? Even the professors couldn’t stop praising your business plan.”

She paused, her tone suddenly becoming serious: “I’ve always believed in you. It’s just that back then… you only had eyes for Sebastian.”

Those words were like a thin needle, gently piercing a corner of Elizabeth’s heart she didn’t want to touch.

She leaned against an airport pillar, watching hurried passengers pass by, memories suddenly flooding back. She had indeed been the acknowledged top student in her department, receiving job offers from multiple publicly traded companies after graduation.

She could have built her own career empire.

That had once been her dream.

But after falling in love with Sebastian, she had given up all opportunities without hesitation, wholeheartedly wanting to be a proper Mrs. Whitmore.

She loved him, so she willingly abandoned her dreams.

But she never imagined it had all been a mistake from the beginning.

His heart belonged to someone else, so no matter how much she gave, it was insignificant in his eyes.

“Elizabeth, you’ve trapped yourself in marriage for too long.”

Zoe’s voice carried heartbreak: “When I saw you at that party, the way you looked… I just felt you didn’t deserve to live like that.”

Elizabeth bit her lip, her nails digging deep into her palms.

So those details she had deliberately ignored had been clear as day to others all along.

She heard her own hoarse voice: “So all these years, you’ve been wanting to bring me into the company?”

“Of course!”

Zoe raised her voice: “Your professional abilities and management talent would absolutely shine in the workplace. I couldn’t bear to shatter your illusions when I saw you devoted entirely to your family. But now it’s good-you’re finally free! So you can’t refuse me!”

Free.

This foreign word hit Elizabeth’s heart heavily.

She seemed so distant from this concept.

Elizabeth thought of how a friend had described each of her previous suicide attempts.

Even now, she found them shocking.

To think someone would actually be willing to attempt suicide for another person.

She wanted to understand.

But fortunately, she had already left all that behind.

She looked up at the brilliant sunshine outside the airport, feeling for the first time in three years that the stifling pressure in her chest had eased

somewhat.

Her phone buzzed with a new message from Zoe-an address, along with a voice note: “The house is mine, you can stay as long as you want. It’s fully furnished, just move right in! Should I pick you up tomorrow to show you around?”

Chapter 13

“No need, I’ll go directly to the company tomorrow.”

Elizabeth suddenly smiled, her voice carrying a decisiveness that had been absent for too long.

“I’ll prepare my employment documents. I want to familiarize myself with the processes as soon as possible, Boss.”

The moment she hung up, Elizabeth felt her body suddenly become lighter.

She dragged her suitcase toward the taxi stand, her fingertip sliding across the address location on her phone screen.

As the taxi started, she received one last message from Zoe: “Welcome! My General Manager Skylar.”

Watching the rapidly retreating streetscape outside the car window, Elizabeth opened her phone’s photo album and deleted all pictures related to

Sebastian.

When the last wedding photo disappeared from the screen, she exhaled deeply and stuffed her phone back in her bag.

Ahead, tall trees stood proudly along the roadside.

Elizabeth’s heart suddenly filled with anticipation for the future.

She was also saying goodbye to her past self, and now, she would become that spirited person she once was.

As for Sebastian, he was just an old landscape on her life’s journey that should have been turned long ago.
