When Justin forced me to my knees, I shouted, “I did nothing wrong!”
He snapped when I wouldn’t apologize.
Suppressing his anger, he still kicked my stomach hard. “If anything happens to Eliza, I’ll make sure your whole family pays!”
Then, he picked her up and walked off.
A text message had me ignoring the pain and running out the door. The whole way there, I kept praying.
“God, please, don’t take her. Let Grandma stay with me.
When I got to her ward, the doctor had just finished trying to save her.
“Doctor, is my grandma okay?” I asked worriedly.
The doctor sighed. “She’s not doing well. If it happens again…”
He didn’t finish, but I got the message.
I didn’t want to believe it.
Once my grandmother was stable, I rushed back home.
I took a letter tucked in the corner of the study. Taking off the ring I had worn for years, I sent it to the address on it.
That was the only hope I had left.
After that, Justin never appeared in front of me again. I poured all my attention into taking care of my grandmother.

But today, out of nowhere, Justin showed up beside her hospital bed.
“What are you doing here?” I shoved him back, eyes full of caution.

He laughed sarcastically. “Scared of me now? Think I’d hurt your precious grandma?”
His fingers dug into my chin.
“Do you know how I felt when Eliza was on that operating table? You’re getting a taste now.”
I tried to fight back, but he was too strong.
He forced me down to my knees, right in front of my grandmother.
“I’m only here for one thing–to make you feel the pain of watching someone you love slip away.”
Then, he grabbed her oxygen mask and yanked it off.
“No! Don’t!
“Justin, you monster! Let go of me!”
I watched in horror as my grandmother’s breathing slowed. Then, he put the mask back.
I collapsed at her bedside, completely drained. But before I could even catch my breath, he snatched the mask away again.
“Come after me if you want! Just don’t touch her!” I shouted.
“She’s all I have left!”
“The only one?” he snapped. “And what about me? My whole family died in misery because of your family’s messed–up drug trials!”

He shot me a mocking look. I dragged myself across the floor, trying to get the oxygen mask back on my grandmother, but he hurled it at the wall.
Her breathing started fading fast.
Then, Justin lost it. He grabbed my neck, his voice filled with rage. “Lillian, tell me who’s gonna compensate me? Why is your family important and mine isn’t?”
I could barely breathe, and tears streamed down my face.
When he felt them, he shoved me away like I was something gross.
My head slammed into the wall, and blood trickled down my forehead.
“Reflect on yourself here. Don’t get up until you figure it out,” he said coldly, then turned and walked out.
My head was pounding, but I still tried to reach my grandmother and get the oxygen mask back on her.
But I kept falling. All I could do was stare at the screen as it turned into a flat line.
I broke down, crying on the ground.
That was when I heard footsteps approaching from outside.
“Lillian.”
