However, Jessica merely frowned slightly, treating him like a stranger. Without stopping, she turned and walked toward the departure gate.
Maxwell’s heart tightened as he pushed through the crowd, running in her direction.
Faster! Just a little faster!
Seeing her again after several months, his heart pounded violently, almost leaping out of his throat.
He knew she was still angry, but that was okay–he would earn her forgiveness.
As Claire had once said, Jessica was easily softened. If he showed weakness or got hurt, she would surely relent.
Maxwell reached Jessica at top speed.
“Jessica…”
Before his words of longing and apology could leave his lips, his pupils constricted in horror as the sign above her head began to fall!
“Watch out!” He lunged forward without hesitation, using his body as a shield.
The falling sign struck him hard, its sharp corner deeply penetrating his shoulder. Instantly, his shirt was soaked in blood.
“Ugh… are you alright?” Maxwell groaned, enduring the pain as he asked about her well–being.
Jessica’s expression was complex as she shook her head. “I’m fine. You don’t need to do this for me. We have no relationship
anymore.”
With these words, Maxwell’s eyes immediately reddened.
“No relationship? Jessica, I never agreed to let you go. You will always be mine. I was wrong about Olivia–I’m sorry. Isn’t that
enough?”
Despite losing a significant amount of blood, his vision darkening, he still clutched Jessica’s hand desperately, refusing to let go.
She merely frowned, calling over airport medical staff to treat his wound.
“Maxwell, we’re done. We have the divorce certificate. Stop pursuing me. Olivia’s situation has nothing to do with me—I don’t care anymore. There’s no need to tell me these things.”
“You saved me, and I’m grateful. This money is for you, as payment for your help. My flight is boarding now. Don’t look for me again.”
With that, Jessica took out a stack of bills from her purse, placed them in his arms, and walked away without looking back.
Watching her cold departure, Maxwell was completely stunned.
In the past, whenever he was injured, she would worry excessively, caring for him until he was completely healed.
Now he had risked his life to save her, and she merely left money?
Sharp, intense pain radiated from deep within his heart. He gasped, struggling to breathe as he called after her:
“Jessica! If you leave now, I’ll refuse treatment and die right here in front of you! Is that what you want?”
His words made Jessica pause mid–step.

Chapter 20
Maxwell’s eyes rekindled with a glimmer of hope as he continued, “Jessica, I got hurt saving you. I don’t need money–I need you to take responsibility.”
“I know you’re disappointed because of Olivia, but if you come back home with me, you’ll see what’s become of her.”
“I don’t love her anymore. I know everything about how she framed you and bullied you. I’ve punished her for it. Please forgive me?”
“No!” Jessica didn’t turn around, coldly returning just this single word before continuing forward, disappearing into the crowd boarding the plane.
She had given him plenty of chances, and he had squandered every one. Each time, it was he who had deeply wounded her, not Olivia.
Even without Olivia, someone else would have done similar things.
Her only heartbreak was that Maxwell, who once loved her deeply, had transferred his affections to someone else, firmly standing by that person while brutally hurting her.
From beginning to end, the person who wounded her most deeply was Maxwell.
Jessica had no intention of forgiving him–never would.
So what if he had saved her life once? How many times had he nearly tortured her to death? How could that debt ever be repaid?
