Her eyes lit up with joy, but she quickly controlled her expression. “But what about Mrs. Hawthorne?”
Charles, already upset with Camilla’s attitude earlier, cut her off. “Don’t worry about her. She’s not in any condition to work right now.”
“Alright, I’ll get back to work then.” Ophelia nodded.
After Ophelia left, Charles sat back in his chair and loosened his collar. He couldn’t stop thinking about how Camilla had refused to apologize to Ophelia earlier. It annoyed him.
‘If changing the garden from tulips to yellow roses was Camilla’s way of getting his attention, what was she trying to pull today?‘ he wondered.
When Charles first hired Camilla as R&D manager, they had signed a ten–year contract. But then she became a vegetative patient.
He had kept her position open for five years. That was more than fair.
Besides, during those five years, Ophelia, as acting manager, had developed several successful new drugs. She deserved the promotion.
In the past, even if Camilla was unhappy, she would’ve held it in, waited until they got home, and asked him gently, or said nothing at all and supported his decisions. She never would’ve challenged him in public like this.
Just as he was getting more irritated, his phone rang. It was a call from the Hawthorne mansion.

Aiden’s deep voice came through. “Charles, I ran into the hospital director during my check–up today. He said Camilla woke up?”
Aiden was a shareholder of that hospital. He had secondary hypertension and went for regular check–ups. Charles realized today was one of those days.
Charles rubbed his temples, tired. “Yes, she woke up a couple of days ago. But she can’t see right now. I was planning to tell you once she recovered.”
She’s blind?” Aiden’s voice was full of disdain. He paused. “Whatever. Since she’s awake, bring her home for dinner tonight. Your mother’s been talking about her precious grandkids.”
Charles hesitated. He didn’t really want to bring Camilla to the mansion tonight. “Dad, tonight-”
But Aiden cut him off, “Make sure Camilla dresses properly. We have an important guest tonight. He also went to Yerinton University, the same year as Camilla. I remember she was quite well–known back then. If they know each other, even better.”
Charles was curious. “Who is this guest? Why are you being so formal and inviting him to the house?”
The Hawthorne mansion was a protected historic estate in Alsewood, beautifully maintained. Aiden rarely allowed outsiders to visit.
Aiden kept it vague. “You’ll find out when you get back. I pulled a lot of strings to get him here. Don’t be late.” He said meaningfully, ‘If tonight goes well, it could be a big boost for your career.‘
“Got it, Dad.” Charles nodded.
Since Aiden had said so, Charles had no reason to refuse. If Camilla

Aiden asked, “By the way, what were you about to say earlier?”
Charles hesitated, then briefly explained what had happened at the company–how Camilla had shown up at R&D and caused a scene.

“Ophelia’s promotion has already been approved by HR. The announcement will go out this afternoon. Camilla chose the worst time to argue with me,” said Charles.
Aiden let out a cold laugh. “Of course she’s going to argue.”
Charles was confused. “Dad, you think Camilla did this on purpose?”
Aiden scoffed, “You know her family background. The only reason I agreed to let her marry into our family was because of her talent and the fact that your grandmother liked her.”
His words were harsh, but Charles didn’t argue.
Aiden continued, “Now that your position in the company is solid, and Camilla has given the Hawthorne family two children, she’s served her purpose. But now she’s blind. If she loses her role as R&D manager, what value does she have left? A blind woman with nothing to offer? She’ll be
discarded.”
