Seeing that, Gillian instinctively glanced over at me, her face drained of all color.
“Sirs, why didn’t gave us a head up that they you were coming? I–I would’ve prepared something!” she stuttered as she approached the sudden guest.
At that moment, a dignified–looking middle–aged man stepped out of the lead car.
“We’re here to attend Miss Riley’s wedding. Where is she?” he asked, voice calm but commanding.
As such, every head in the room turned toward me.§
Gillian stood frozen, staring at me like she’d just seen a ghost.
I stepped forward slowly, lips curled into a small, cold smile. “Sorry for the trouble, everyone. Didn’t expect you’d have to come all the way out here this late.”
The man looked up and shook my hands with both of his, firm and respectful.}
“The Councilor was right about you,” he said warmly. “You truly are a woman who stands shoulder to shoulder with men.”
Gillian, still dazed, finally found her voice. “Wait… sir… are you sure you’ve got the right person? She’s just some pretty face. Are you sure this is the Miss Riley you’re looking for?“>
The man turned to her sharply, his face now serious. “You’re the Cobb family’s secretary, right?”}
She nodded, clearly starting to regret her words.
“Then there’s no mistake,” he said. “We’re here under direct orders from higher authorities to attend Miss Riley’s wedding.”}
The color drained from her face. Her entire body trembled as she said, “S–sir… could you maybe tell me, just a little, who she really is? For Mr. Cobb’s sake?”
“Sorry,” he sa
crisply. “That’s classified.“}
With just that one sentence, Gillian began sweating bullets.
Hayden, watching his secretary get humbled, finally couldn’t take it. Trying to save face, he stepped forward and introduced himself. “Sir, I’m Edric Cobb’s son, the chairman of Cobb Corporation. Given that I’m her… husband, don’t I have the right to know who she is?” The man sighed, clearly uncomfortable.
“Mr. Cobb… I understand your position. But orders are orders. Even as Miss Riley’s husband, you’re not authorized to know her background.”
Gasps filled the room.
“Wait, what did he just say? Did I hear that right? Not even her husband is allowed to know her identity?”
“One phone call and she summoned New York 1–tier officials to the venue? There are only a handful of people in this country who can pull that off!”
Veronica’s POV
“Well, this is going to be a show,” someone in the crowd muttered. “Looks like the Cobbs is in real trouble this time.”
As the murmurs around us grew louder, Hayden’s face turned visibly pale.
“Mr. Cobb,” I said calmly, my guests are already here. Now then, don’t you think it’s time we finally talk about my wedding dress?”
Hayden clenched his jaw “Veronica, I looked it up just now,” he said, pulling out his phone, “and there’s nothing about your so–called
dress online.”
