Leo was back the next morning, hauling a giant
suitcase.
“What’s this about?” I asked.
Leo barged in.
“Clara, this is my home. I’m just coming home.”
Sawyer came out of the kitchen, holding a plate
of breakfast. His face darkened when he saw
Leo.
Leo glared. “Sawyer, this is my house. Get the
hell out.”
Sawyer calmly took off his apron, smoothed his

shirt, and looked at me. “Clara, wanna get out
of here?”
“Yeah,” I said.
Leo grabbed my arm. “You’re not going anywhere with him. I’m your husband! We’ve
known each other since we were kids. I was
with you through the toughest times. How can
you just walk away?”
I shook him off. “I don’t care. I have amnesia.
Everyone says he’s my husband, so he’s my
husband.”
“Clara!” Leo yelled. “You’ll regret this!”
“Doubt it.”
From the moment he betrayed me, I had no
expectations.
We walked out.

Leo stood there, watching us leave. He was
lost.
Then his eyes fell on the photo on the table.
It was a picture of me and Sawyer, taken the
first night we’d slept together.
Sawyer had said, “Clara, if you lose your
memory again, you can look at this and
remember me.”
I was snuggled in Sawyer’s arms, my face
flushed.
Leo looked at it, then grabbed a chair and
smashed it.

“Sawyer, you piece of shit! I can’t believe I ever
considered you a friend!”
Leo went to a bar, ordering the strongest drinks
<
he could find.
His stomach burned with the alcohol, but he
didn’t feel it.
The more he drank, the clearer his head
became.
The more he regretted.
Why had everything fallen apart?
He’d thought he was ready to come home.
He’d thought he could never forget his first
love.
Now he knew, I was the one he couldn’t let go
- of.
Heidi showed up.
“Leo, stop drinking!” She frowned. “You can

talk to me. Why are you doing this to yourself?”
Leo looked up at her.
She was the reason he’d ruined everything.
He felt sick.
He’d lost his wife for some cheap thrill.
He’d thought he was in love with Heidi.
Now he knew he loved me.
“Heidi, we’re done. Get an abortion.”
Heidi was stunned. “What are you saying?”
Leo laughed. “Clara is my wife. You’re just
some side chick. You don’t get to have my
baby.”
Heidi couldn’t believe it. “You said you loved
<
me! You said you couldn’t live without me! You
wanted this baby!”
“I changed my mind!” Leo slammed his glass
down. “I see Clara with another guy, and it kills
me! I need to be with her!”
“What about me?” Heidi cried. “You can’t do
this!”
“Let’s go!” Leo dragged her toward the door.
“I’m taking you to get an abortion!”
“No! I won’t!”
Leo forced her into the car.
Instead of going to the clinic, he got some
abortion pills and forced them down her throat.
Heidi bled everywhere.
“Leo, save our baby!”

Leo just stared. “Heidi, we were a mistake. It’s
time we fixed it.”
“I hate you! You’ll pay for this!”
