Chapter 12 – Mixed Feelings

I watched as my father and Jack discussed business and an eerie calmness washed over me. He was finally mine after years of plotting.

My phone rang and I stepped outside to pick the call. It was a private investigator I had hired to find Gwen.

“Miss Cara,” his smooth voice filled the phone.

“Give me good news, Calvin,” I stressed.

“I can’t find her, Miss. It’s like she’s vanished into thin air. There’s nothing that traces back to her he answered.

I snarled softly, “That bitch commented on my fucking post. Trace her IP address!”

“We traced it but the last known location of the phone was in Melbourne Airport, Australia,” Calvin answered.

I frowned, “Australia? Why would she go to Australia? She doesn’t know anyone and has no money.”

“Yes, there are no bank record transactions in her name and we can’t find her name on any flight record,” Calvin answered.

“It doesn’t make sense. I pay you to do a good job, so find that whore so I can end her miserable life for good!” I snapped.

I hung up the phone and exhaled softly as my son came running toward me.

“Mommy, are you upset?” he asked.

“No, David, go play with your grandma,” I answered.

I went back to my Facebook post and stared at the comment Gwen had made before she blocked me.

Her comment didn’t even show she was upset despite the fact that she saw me wearing her

ring.

“Fucking bitch!” I muttered.

My phone beeped and I realized today is my hospital checkup.

I was too upset to go anywhere. I went back inside the house and poured myself a glass of wine but before I could drink it my mom grabbed it from me.

“Why are you drinking wine, Cara, are you trying to kill the baby?” she asked in a shocked tone.

I sighed, running a hand through my hair, “It’s just a sip, Mom, I’m just so tired.”

“What’s got you so worked up, love?” she asked me.

I shrugged, “It’s just I don’t know, Jack has proposed but he didn’t seem so keen about it and he’s not asked me to make any plans concerning the wedding.”

My mom nodded, “That’s true, Princess, but you know that Jack is trying to save his company. He just finished dealing with a scandal.”

“I know, Mom, but is just that he spends a lot of time with

My words were interrupted when George and Tony came inside, beaming happily.

“Mom, we’ve heard news on Rachel,” George said.

My mom immediately turned her attention to the boys and ignored me.

I frowned, whenever Rachel was mentioned everyone in the house seemed to forget that I exist.

Rachel was my elder sister that went missing when she was five years old at a school play.

We had gone for the school play and there was a fire. Rachel lost her way and she was never found. No dead bodies were recovered from the fire either.

My parents have searched for years and they’ve been unable to find her.

“We found the orphanage where she grew up. She was rescued and someone took her to that orphanage. It’s here in New York,” Tony said.

I frowned, “How was she in an orphanage in New York here and we were unable to find her. Are you sure you heard correctly or they aren’t deceiving you?”

My mom hushed me harshly, “Don’t be so negative, Cara. You should be happy we’ve finally heard something after all these years. Come, Tony, let’s go to the orphanage.”

And just like that they left me there, my mom forgetting that just a while ago she was trying to console me.

Muttering under my breath I went to the sitting room and realized that even my father had joined them to leave.

Jack turned to me, “Isn’t your checkup today?”

I rolled my eyes, “At least someone in this house remembers that I exist.”

Jack frowned, “What do you mean, Princess? I’ve just been trying to put things in order.”

I sighed, “I know, I’m sorry. It is just whenever they mention my missing sister, everyone forgets about me. It’s been years since she went missing, it’s possible she’s dead.”

Jack frowned, “Don’t say that, Cara, she’s your sister. You should be glad there’s news about her.”

I grabbed my bag, “You know what? I can find my way to the hospital.”

Then I stomped out of the house. I wish Rachel is never found. In fact, I wish she’s dead!
