hapter 16 – Confused Emotions and A Lost Deal
I stared at the numerous messages flooding into my phone wishing me congratulations on my wedding with Cara.
Matt was sitting in my office as he stared at the pictures and was smiling smugly.
“I can’t believe you get to have it all after what you did to Gwen,” he said.
I turned to Matt, “Did you leak the video?”
Matt frowned, “Why would I do something that’s going to affect us, huh? Do you know the type of heat I’ve been facing in my company because of that video?”
I sighed, rubbing a hand across my eyes, “I’m sorry, I’m just stressed.”
Matt frowned, “What’s stressing you, Man? Why are you even at the office when you got married yesterday, huh? Shouldn’t you be off on your honeymoon or something?”
I shrugged, “Can’t do much on the honeymoon when the bride is pregnant.”
Matt chuckled, “Yeah but I’m sure Cara would have preferred you were spending the day with her.”
I scoffed, picking up the documents on my desk as I arranged them neatly. A few hours from now and I’ll be able to build my company again.
Matt studied me with a frown on his face and I grew uncomfortable with the way he was staring at me.
“What?” I queried.
Matt shrugged, “Something is off. You don’t seem too happy especially since you’re finally married to Cara.”
I sighed, “I don’t know, Matt. Something hasn’t been right since Gwen left. The proposal with Cara wasn’t even supposed to happen. I only came to ask her parents for help and somehow she put me in the spotlight and got me to propose.”
Matt frowned, “What do you mean? Haven’t you always wanted to marry Cara? Why do you sound like you’re not sure again?”
I shrugged, “I don’t know, Matt. Everything seems like Cara is planning it. She put me on the spot with the marriage thing too. I just don’t know if it’s what I want now.”
Matt scoffed, “Hold on, don’t tell me you’re now in love with Gwen.”
Hearing Matt’s words I wondered if it was true. Once upon a time, I had been in love with Gwen. Then the moment Cara came back I forgot all about Gwen.
Matt chuckled, “Holy shit! You fucking love her!!” Then he burst into laughter.
I stared at him as he laughed like a crazed person.
“What’s so damn funny?!” I snapped at him.
Matt laughed, “You’re so stupid, Man! What do you think she’s gonna do, huh? Take you back after all you’ve done to her?”
I shrugged, “I don’t know, okay! I messed up but now I need to find her to fix things.”
8:12 pm
Matt scoffed, “You’re married to Cara now. You have a child with her and she’s expecting another. Get your head out of your ass!”
“Things with Cara… I don’t know, I’m not so sure anymore,” I sighed.
Matt tossed the files he was holding on the desk.
“You’re an asshole, Jack! Fucking idiot!!” he snapped and stormed out.
I stood rooted to the spot as I watched the door slam shut. Then my intercom buzzed pulling me back to reality.
It was my secretary, reminding me that it’s time for my meeting with Mr. Lin.
I grabbed the documents and headed for the meeting room.
Mr. Lin and his bodyguards were already waiting for me.
I smiled and extended my hand for a handshake when I saw him.
“I’m glad you could make it, Lin,” I said.
Lin grunted in response as I handed him the files.
“These are the projects my team is going to be working on soon. These projects are estimated to generate at least half a billion dollars in six months so your investment won’t be in vain,” explained.
Lin barely glanced at the document. He just sat up and blew smoke out of his pipe.
“I’m friends with Cara’s family that’s why I extended you the courtesy of coming,” he said.
I smiled, “I appreciate that, Lin.”
“I can’t help you, Jack, I sold my company last night. I’m retiring early,” he said.
My ears rang as I stared at him, eyes wide with shock.
“I’m sorry, what? Why?” I cried.
“I can’t do business with disloyal men. You ruined your ex-wife, Gwen, what’s to say you won’
screw me over?”
“What happened between me and Gwen was a misunderstanding… I didn’t even sign the divorce papers… I’m trying to -” I sputtered, trailing off.
Lin stared at me with a scowl, “You married Cara yesterday, Jack, you ruined the deal yourself.”
I watched in a daze as he stood up and left with his bodyguards, my ears ringing with his words.
‘You ruined the deal yourself.’
