Chapter 6
Fortunately, Evren’s outstanding performance on his last research project earned him special recognition from his advisor, and he went on a business trip to San Francisco with the team to expand collaborations.[]
He temporarily had no time to return to our shared apartment.[]
If this project could be successfully advanced and turned into a marketable product, he could achieve financial freedom early.[]
He was truly heaven’s favored child–smart, disciplined, and extremely lucky.[]
Someone like me, who climbed up purely through effort, could hardly compare.[]
On my end, the complications from my allergic reaction were finally gradually healing.
I began to fully focus on preparing for overseas graduate school applications.[]
Meanwhile, Evren actually started actively messaging me:[]
[Didn’t you always say you wanted to go back to Los Angeles with me?]]]
[When this project wraps up, I’ll go back with you.]]]
Much later, he sent another message:[]
[Okay?]]
He had never asked me like this before.
In this relationship, we both knew he always held the initiative.[]
He could be cold, could avoid, could even leave without explanation.[]
And I–always loved him too deeply, constantly retreating my boundaries.[]
I stared at the phone screen for a long time.[]
I couldn’t even remember when I had unblocked him.[]
Maybe during some night when I was sleeping, he found it too troublesome not being able to contact me and simply took my phone to change it himself.[]
He said he wanted to go back to Los Angeles together.[]
I had indeed once wanted to take him back.
I wanted to stand at the entrance of our high school and show him the coffee shop across from the library, where I had silently watched him afternoon after afternoon.
Wind blowing fallen leaves–that day he had just left, and a leaf happened to brush past his shoulder, like some metaphor of fate.[]
I picked up that fallen leaf, took it home, and pressed it between book pages to make a specimen.[]
I’d always kept it, like preserving a love no one knew about.[]
Friends said I was crazy.
“You like Evren that much?“]
Yes, I liked Evren that much.]
Humbly, passionately, uncontrollably loving Evren.[]
Goodbye, My Gentus Boyfriend
Chapter 6
The night before the exam, late at night, I encountered Evren. I had been emotionally shut down for a long time, sprinting with full effort, memorizing notes even in the last ten minutes.[]
But when I walked out of the library, I happened to run into him coming home for summer break.]
My heartbeat suddenly skipped.]
In that instant, I felt-
This was heaven’s reward to me.
I ran forward without hesitation, calling his name: “Evren! Evren!“]
He stopped in confusion, took off his headphones, and glanced at me.[]
But–he didn’t recognize me.[]
Seeing me in the same school uniform, he realized I was an underclassman and just nodded, saying politely and distantly:[]
“Good luck on your SAT.“[]
“Good
In that moment, I almost cried.[]
But I still smiled and nodded seriously:
“Thanks. I’ll do my best.“]
Later, I really got into Harvard and stood on the same ground as him.[]
Before school started, I took out that candy.[]
The one Evren had given me when I fainted from low blood sugar at the sports festival and he took me to the infirmary.[]
Evren was looking down at college–level problems then, handing me a candy with a tone as calm as if doing something insignificant:[]
“The teacher said eating some sugar helps you recover faster.“]
He didn’t even look up at me
And I–from that day on, as if poisoned, fell in love with him.[]
I never ate that candy.]
I treasured it until the syrup oxidized and spoiled, no longer edible.
Later when we became a couple, I brought out the candy he had given me when I fainted from low blood sugar.
Evren just looked at me with some confusion: “What’s this?”
Obviously.
He didn’t remember me
I thought, maybe my love for Evren was like that candy.
Like a child, I carefully preserved it, treasuring it like a gem.]
But in the end, it still rotted.[]
I never answered Evren’s invitation to return to Los Angeles, blocked and deleted him again, and changed my phone password.[]
