Chapter 9
I first met Oliver in college.
He was a senior a year ahead of me, known for his striking looks and outstanding academic achievements. I had heard about him since my first
year.
Naturally, I was very curious about this senior who was admired for both his character and intellect.
We met at a casual club event.
At the time, he wasn’t as awful as he was now. His every action reflected his excellent upbringing.
Likewise, I wasn’t as self–conscious as I was today. I fully displayed the sense of entitlement that came from a privileged background.
Unfortunately, because of this, people around me often disliked me.
Even a simple comment would be misconstrued as me flaunting my wealth, and despite giving numerous gifts, I’d only receive their sarcastic gratitude.
From childhood to adulthood, when had I ever faced such hardships? Living alone, far from home, was truly unbearable, and with no one to confide in, I felt defeated for days on end.
It was during this period that Oliver came into the picture.
He noticed me crouched by the roadside on his way back from his evening self–study session. Out of genuine concern, he approached me and asked a few questions.

After hearing about my situation, he didn’t see me as spoiled. Instead, he kindly offered his comfort.
I could vividly recall that moment.
Moonlight had bathed him, casting an almost holy glow around him.
The bright, perceptive young man stood next to me, his eyes filled with warmth and understanding.
In that instant, I knew I had to be with him.
Everything progressed just as I had hoped. We gradually got to know each other, grew closer, fell in love, and maintained that love.
Ultimately, we walked down the aisle together.
But what happened next?
I could barely remember it.
The days continued to roll by, one after another, yet somewhere along the line, our emotions had shifted beyond recognition.
I knew that love could wane amidst the routine of everyday life, but I was unprepared for it.
In my desperation, I tried to secure our bond with a child–even stepping down from my managerial position to allow him room to flourish.
I believed doing so would keep him with me.
How naive I was.
Ultimately, not only did I lose the child, but Oliver also slipped away.
He started coming home later and later, carrying the scent of unfamiliar

What began as secretive hiding gradually turned into blatant openness.
Our once mutual adoration transformed into a hostile estrangement.
Everything came to a head the day I heard him casually explaining his relationship with Sally at the office.
Only then did it hit me that every encounter we had in the past had been carefully orchestrated from the beginning.
In reality, there was no evening study session that day, and he typically wouldn’t have spoken in such poetic terms.
It had all been a part of his deliberate plan.
And now, many years later, I just came to that realization.
‘Oliver was, in reality, nothing more than the trash beneath my feet. He wasn’t the great man I had previously thought he was.”
Everything had come too late.
After a prolonged silence on my part, Oliver became restless and prompted me.
Slowly, my thoughts came together when Adam gently held my hand. Regaining my composure, I accepted the paperwork from the staff member and signed it.
said into the phone, “It’s essential.”
Then, I ended the call.
