Chapter 16
“You’re getting married, right?”
“True, but…
But their marriage wasn’t based on love.
Unsure of how to explain, Paulette shook her head. “I’ll get him a gift
anyway.”
Annabelle shook her head and texted Jeremiah, “You’ve got a long way to go to win her over, dude.”
Jeremiah replied with a question mark.
She glanced at his text but didn’t reply.
After browsing for a while, in consideration of her budget, Paulette picked a tie from an original designer brand.
Though it wasn’t exactly expensive, it cost her half of her savings.
Then Annabelle dropped her off at home.
At the villa entrance, Annabelle blew her a kiss. “Paula, we’re friends. now. If anything, let me know.”
“OK, Anna. Be careful on the way.”
Paulette was in a good mood. After Annabelle’s car vanished into the distance, she turned around and entered.
Just as she entered the entryway, Nelson, who was walking out of the kitchen with a glass of water, saw her and frowned. “Why are you back so

late?”
Before she could answer, his gaze fell on the bag she was holding. “You went shopping?”
She instinctively hid the bag behind her back. “Yeah.”
He squinted. “Who with?”
Nelson’s tone was as questioning as ever, but Paulette was no longer intimidated. She said flatly, “I can go out with anyone I want. Dad, surely, you won’t control who I can hang out with, right?”
She thought, “Nelson was nowhere to be seen in the past few days, and he shows up today after my encounter with Patricia in the massage center? I bet she went to him and told on me..
“How ridiculous. She really thinks of me as her rival.”
“Dad, just say what you wanna say. I’m tired,” she said.
This was the first time Nelson had seen her so impatient. Gritting his teeth, he spat, “Look at you, Paulette, all grown up. You went out with sketchy people and disrespected me so boldly.”
She looked up. “What do you mean, sketchy people?”
How could he say this? Just because she refused to tell him whom she had gone shopping with?
Just then, Nelson noticed the bag in her hand.
Patricia had taken him to that store not long ago, and he knew it was a high–end menswear brand specializing in custom tailoring.
Though it wasn’t a luxury brand, things sold there weren’t cheap.

He had met all her friends–which weren’t exactly a lot–and none of them. were that rich.
In other words, she went shopping with a man.
It was the only explanation.
His face fell. “Haven’t I told you? Stay away from boys. They’re all up to something.”
“Dad, it seems that to you, everyone’s up to something.”
Paulette looked him in the eye and said word by word, “But I’m no longer
a little girl. Even if I go out with someone, it’s perfectly natural. Besides… it’s what you want, isn’t it?”
Nelson was taken aback.
He thought, “She’s right.
“If she dates someone, she won’t be all over me.
“But… Why? As I picture her with someone, I find it so hard to breathe.”
His Adam’s apple bobbed. Looking away, he said, “You can be in a relationship, but your boyfriend has to be reliable in all aspects. I’m just worried about you, Paulette.”
She stared at him expressionlessly for a while. No longer wanting to argue with him over this, she pursed her lips and said, “I went shopping With Anna. You’ve got nothing to worry about.”
With that, she went back to the room and put the tie in her suitcase.

She had wanted to tell Nelson the truth.
But she had a change of mind when she saw the look on his face.
“If he knows, I don’t even think I get to leave Fromond,” she thought.
