Chapter 21
Paulette thought she’d be upset. But perhaps she’d gotten used to the pain. She merely felt dazed for a second.
Paulette turned and pried Nelson’s fingers off her one by one.
She said calmly, “This pendant is from Mom. Anything can replace it, no matter how expensive it is. And I don’t want people I hate to have her thing.
“Manners… You should’ve known where my manners are, Dad.”
Nelson couldn’t find the words to retort.
He swallowed hard.
Paulette’s aloof expression stung.
Paulette forced a smile and said, “Since Ms. Carver is hurt, you should return to her side. However, I hope you can take Mom’s jade pendant back tonight. Or…I’ll go collect it myself.”
The veins in Nelson’s temples jumped. It took him a while to recover.
Was Paulette… threatening him?
He tugged at his collar, feeling annoyed for reasons he didn’t know.
Back in her room, Paulette threw herself on the bed once she took off the jacket. She turned on her stomach and just lay there. After a while, sorrow washed over her.
“Nelson… Jerk!”

How could he give her things to others?
Not just anyone, but Patricia!
Paulette bit her cover angrily. Her phone buzzed.
Paulette was taken aback. Seconds later, she turned and reached for it. Secing Jeremiah’s name on the screen, she sniffed and answered it.
“Jeremiah…”
Jeremiah paused and asked lowly, “Are you sad?”
Paulette was mostly fine. But Jeremiah’s question caused tears to well up in her eyes again. “It’s nothing. No big deal.”
She was answering Jeremiah and comforting herself.
Really, it wasn’t a big deal.
Paulette was leaving this place in a week.
Jeremiah just got out of a meeting and spoke to her while walking. A beautiful blonde on the business partner’s team patted his shoulder from behind. Her gaze was inviting as she asked, “Mr. Swanson, do you have time for dinner?”
Jeremiah smiled apologetically and pointed at his phone, meaning he was
on a call.
“Sorry. My fiancee is upset. I have to cheer her up.”
Paulette heard the exchange clearly. Jeremiah’s answer made her blush. Covering herself with the blanket, she said in a small voice, “What? Jeremiah. I don’t need you to cheer me up.”
Jeremiah chuckled and walked away, not caring about the people around

him. “OK. Now, Ms. Davenport, would you share with me? What’s troubling you?”
Paulette thought for a moment and decided it was fine.
“My family… You know how it is. My parents barely left me anything. Only a jade pendant Mom put on me before I left.
“The jade pendant is my only connection to them now. It’s my treasure. I worried that I’d lose it and asked Nelson to keep it safe for me.
“But he gave the jade pendant to Patricia.
“In his defense, he only lent it to her… But I’m the owner. How could he do that?”
Jeremiah listened patiently with a frown. When he heard a sob, he said lowly, “Yes, how could he? I’m coming back to kick his ass. How about that?”
Paulette paused and said, “That’s not good.”
“Why?”
“After all…he’s my dad.”
Jeremiah leaned on the railing lazily and gazed at the busy night of Akadiya. “Fine, I won’t do it. Let’s stay away from him. Out of sight, out of mind.” Paulette said yes softly.
After talking to Jeremiah for a while, Paulette forgot why she was upset earlier.
“Is your work finished?”
Jeremiah said yes. He paused before adding, “Do you want a souvenir?”

“A souvenir…” But he had already helped Annabelle. Paulette thought it’d be impolite if she asked for more.
She shook her head. “No, I don’t need anything.”
Jeremiah frowned again, thinking that Paulette was treating him like an outsider.
But as they just became a couple, he knew he couldn’t rush her.
