Chapter 6
Mrs. Blackwood and my mom had been best friends.[]
They’d never had a single fight their whole lives. When I was struggling at my relatives‘ place, it was Mrs. Blackwood who paid a huge sum to get them to let me go, then brought me back to live with the Blackwoods.
Nobody wanted Rhett and me to work out more than she did.[]
Now, watching the footage still rolling on the screens, she was shaking with rage, screaming at Rhett:[]
“You’re a fucking animal!“]]
But Rhett was completely oblivious.[]
His own mother was hitting him and screaming at him, Ivy was pushing and shoving him, guests were laughing at him, relatives were gossiping, and classmates and friends were all whispering.]]
His world felt like it was behind a wall. All he could hear echoing in his head was my message:[]
[How do you like my wedding present for you?]]]
Suddenly he remembered when he was eighteen, holding my broken body, holding me back from jumping off that building with my mom. He’d cried until he couldn’t breathe.[]
“Wren, please don’t die.“]]
He’d begged me.[]
“You still have me. Don’t do that, Wren!“]
“I love you. I love you so much!“]
“Wren, I won’t be a heartless bastard like your dad. If I ever betray you, let me die! Please give me a chance to love you.“]
That year, he’d personally pieced me back together. He’d watched me transform from broken fragments into the gentle little kitten I’d become.[]
But watching me turn soft and sweet, he’d often miss the fierce me, the rebellious me.
So when Ivy showed up, when Ivy was the complete opposite of me, he suddenly felt like life had excitement again. Having a secret affair behind my back became his only thrill. But he knew damn well that I was the only person he’d ever loved.
Ivy was just entertainment.]
Not love.
And definitely not wife material.]
Thinking of that, he turned on Ivy:[]
“You planted condoms in my place?”
“You left your underwear under my pillow?”
“You already went looking for Wren before I got back, and you still had the nerve to come provoke her again!“]]
No wonder I’d seemed off that day. No wonder I’d been throwing up bile in the bathroom. No wonder when he’d walked up behind me, I hadn’t even noticed–I was just jamming my fingers down my throat, crying hysterically.[]
He’d imagined every possibility: work stress, difficult colleagues, even wondering if I’d been thinking about my disgusting father.]
Chapter 6
The one thing he never considered was that his own words many years ago had become prophecy-
“If I ever betrays Wren Morrison…“[]
“Let me lose Wren forever, and let me be completely destroyed!“[]
I’d made both happen.]]
I’d made him lose me and ruined his reputation.]]
Then I closed the chaotic livestream, not wanting to watch anymore, but Summer was glued to it, even screenshotting for her Tik Tok.[]
[What a beautiful shitshow! Nailed it!]]]
Then she threw her arm around my shoulders: “I never knew you had it in you. You knew damn well Rhett would be humiliated, and you knew he and Ivy would never make it to the altar, right?“]
I shook my head.
I wasn’t arrogant enough to think I was irreplaceable to Rhett.[]
I was just gambling–gambling on our childhood bond, gambling that our shared experiences were carved into his bones, gambling that the boy I’d fallen for was just sleeping in his soul, not completely gone.[]
Luckily, I’d bet right.[]
“This is fucking amazing!”
She cracked open a beer for me.]]
“It’s like the revenge story of the year! Guy’s wedding day, bride runs off, side piece tries to take her place and gets totally destroyed!“]
“Hahaha, the groom won’t even look at her! Even his whole family dragged her ass out of there!”
She showed me the latest news.[]
“Look! The Blackwood wedding disaster is trending.“]]
On Tik Tok, blurred videos were everywhere.[]
But everyone who knew the Blackwoods could tell who was who and how massive the scandal was.
