Chapter83
Reuben came out of the private kitchen and offered to take Paulette.
“No need, uncle. I’ve called a cab.”
It’s just…
Wasn’t Reuben looking for her because of his mother’s inheritance?
Today’s meal took so long, not a single word about inheritance was mentioned.
Paulette organized her words and whispered, “Uncle, my mother asked you to give me something…”
“Ah, you mean the inheritance?” Reuben clapped his hands as if just remembering, “Your mom made a will, everything is supposed to be given to you when you turn eighteen. I rushed to see you today and forgot to bring it, I’ll bring it next time along with the paperwork.”
When Paulette didn’t speak, he said again, “If you’re not sure… do you want to come back with me now?”
“No need.”
Paulette looked into his eyes, trying to see something different inside.
Too bad, there was nothing.
Reuben’s company may not be a big corporation, but after half a lifetime of wandering in the market, he has already honed his skills. Some may call it shrewdness, others may call it cunning.

Paulette repeated calmly, “No need, uncle, I’m not in a hurry.”

Reuben laughed calmly and reassuringly, “No need to rush, it’s all yours anyway.”
The ride–hailing car arrived.
Paulette waved goodbye.
Tabitha had her hands in the pockets of her overalls, looking carefree and
a bit rebellious, “See you next time, Paula.”
Paulette nodded slightly and bent down to get into the car.
Reuben didn’t turn around until the white car was out of sight.
Strictly said, “If you keep acting up like this, just go back to Hotruesia! Do you know you almost ruined everything for me?!”
Tabitha shrugged, “What’s wrong? Are you worried about your niece?”
“You…!”
“What? Did I say something wrong?”
Tabitha chuckled, waved down a passing taxi, and said, “Afraid I’ll mess things up for you? Then don’t call me again.”
“Reuben looked at his disobedient daughter at home, he was so angry but he couldn’t do anything about it.”
I stood there for a while, and then the phone rang.
He angrily took out his phone and answered, “Speak!”
The man was silent for two seconds, then his magnetic voice said, “Mr. Murphy seems to… have some thoughts about this phone call with me?”

Reuben’s heart skipped a beat, then he realized who it was and chuckled, “Oh, how could it be? I just finished lecturing my daughter and didn’t notice who was calling. Mr. Chapman, please don’t mind.”
Nelson didn’t say anything, instead he asked, “Did you see her?”
“Saw you, saw you.”
Reuben walked to the parking lot and said, “I didn’t expect this girl to be so capable. She became a designer on her own right after graduation.”
“Designer?” Nelson asked in a deep voice, “What designer?”
Didn’t he already say hi and tell everyone not to do Paulette any favors,
make her start from scratch?
Reuben just played dumb and said with a smile, “Paulette is a jewelry designer, isn’t she?”
“She said she was doing well at the company, her superiors were taking good care of her. The new season’s product selection is about to start, not everyone who just graduated can have such an opportunity.”
Nelson didn’t even bother to listen to him, he just casually said a few words and hung up the phone.
I called Derrick in on the intercom.
“Mr. Chapman, you wanted to see me.”
Nelson gave him a serious look and said, “You have ten minutes to find out which branch Paulette joined, who handled it, and if she was given any special treatment.”
Paulette always liked to play tricks, and the familiar executives always indulged her.

But after thinking about it, Nelson couldn’t think of anyone who would go against his instructions and take the risk to look after her.
Derrick hadn’t heard Paulette’s name from Nelson in a long time, so he hesitated before replying, “Yeah, I’ll go now.”
Ten minutes later-
Derrick returned to the office and hesitantly said, “Mr. Chapman…”
Nelson had a bad feeling, furrowing his brow, “Spit it out.”
“I asked all the branch managers, Ms. Davenport didn’t start working, and no one has seen her…”
Derrick’s voice got quieter and quieter, and he started to lower his head.
The heavy atmosphere made it hard to breathe. Nelson stayed still in the same position, his eyes as deep as spilled ink, bottomless.
One second.
Two seconds.
Not sure how long it had been, Derrick felt his legs had gone numb when he finally heard the man’s cold voice asking, “What do you mean… not hired?”
Derrick gritted his teeth and repeated what he had just said, “Ms. Davenport didn’t join any branch of the Chapman Group.”
“Where was she then!”
The tone suddenly rose, Nelson loosened his tie.
