For the next two days, I didn’t go back to the Clark mansion. I stayed at Sadie’s house.
Sadie cried when she saw my swollen cheek. Her brother kept bringing us fresh towels and ice packs.
I spoke carefully. “Sadie, does your brother happen to need another sister? I don’t want Leo as my brother
anymore.”
Sadie grinned mischievously. “I don’t think he needs a sister; he has me. But I think he’s looking for a wife
who can keep him in line.”
My face flushed a brilliant red.
I laughed awkwardly. “But I’m just a janitor’s daughter. Wouldn’t he mind?”
Sadie pulled the blanket up higher. “Does he look like he minds? He’s never once come to my school, and today he just shows up out of the blue? I fractured my kneecap last year and he didn’t even fly back to see me. You get slapped once, and he’s running around with towels and ice packs.”
I turned away, mumbling, “But I just wanted a brother.”
Jenna had posted our entire drama online.
The DNA results weren’t even out yet, and she was already getting impatient. She was desperate to escape
her old life, desperate to put an end to 18 years of misery.
I could feel the waves of malice from my classmates.
She decked herself out in the most expensive clothes and jewelry from my closet, as if trying to broadcast
her new wealth to the world. She couldn’t even wait a few more days. In her mind, her status as the Clark
heiress was already set in stone.
Sadie saw her parading around and spat. “Scheming bitch.”
My parents were worried sick. When they found out Leo had slapped me, they locked him in his room for a
day without food. They seemed terrified of the results. If I really wasn’t their daughter, they didn’t know what they would do.
I, for one, couldn’t wait to see the look on Leo’s face when the results were announced. It was going to be
priceless.
Soon enough, the day came.
My mother, my father, and Leo, with Jenna and Spencer in tow, were all there. Jenna’s mother sat quietly off
to the side.

The hospital director held the file, seated at the head of the conference table.
On my side, Sadie was with me, and so was her brother.
