Chapter 1
After graduating from university, my fiancé suddenly told me he wanted to stay on as a faculty member.
That was when I guessed that Mason Lewis had fallen for his professor.
So I sat him down and spoke frankly.
Either we called off the engagement, or his professor had to be transferred.
He disappeared for the entire night, and when he returned the next morning, he had deep circles under his eyes. He only said one thing: “The engagement goes on as planned.”
On the day of our engagement, just as Mason was about to slip the ring onto my finger, the doors to the banquet hall burst open.
A woman stood there holding a child.
“Mason, are you really going to abandon me and our baby?”
His hand instinctively curled into a fist.
I grabbed his wrist tightly and warned him under my breath,
“If you dare walk away now, this won’t be over.”
He stared at the ring for a moment. Just as he was about to put it on me, the baby in the woman’s arms suddenly began to cry, as if on
cue.
He muttered an apology, turned around, and walked away without looking back.
“Olivia, this is your decision to make.”
“No matter what, the family will always support you,” my mom said, then shot Mason’s parents a daggered look.
“You really can’t judge a book by its cover. I always thought something was off with how Mason kept vanishing for months. Turns out he was off having a child with another woman!”
“This is the kind of son the Lewis family raised? If I had a son like that, I’d have beaten him senseless.”
I froze for a second.
Mason had always dreamed of becoming a star, someone who would bask in the spotlight.
So when he told me he wanted to stay at the university, I knew it was because he had fallen in love with his professor.
Sarah, my best friend, thought I was being paranoid.
“What’s wrong with staying on at the university? The job’s stable, and there’s summer and winter vacation.”
I sneered inwardly.
What our classmates didn’t know was our family backgrounds.
For Mason’s coming–of–age ceremony, he received ten percent shares of his family’s company.
With his wealth and status, he could’ve done anything he wanted.
The last thing he would’ve chosen was a nine–to–five job as a teaching assistant.
The only real conflict between us had always been our future plans.
I had to inherit the family business, so I planned to study abroad after graduation.
Mason, on the other hand, had no real ambition. All he wanted was to drift through life.

Which, honestly, wouldn’t have been a big deal.
He didn’t want to study abroad, and I never tried to force him.
I still remembered the day I made my decision to leave the country. He held me gently and coaxed, “I don’t want a life where I can see the end from the start. What if I really make it as a singer? Then you’ll be married to a celebrity,”
“I’ll visit you overseas. Isn’t that even more exciting?”
I let myself be persuaded.
So I went abroad.
And he stayed behind in the name of freedom and dreams.
Our families pushed for an engagement anyway, but I held firm and resisted the pressure from both sides.
My thinking back then was simple.
Let him chase his dreams–marriage shouldn’t be a burden.
What I hadn’t expected was that his so–called “freedom” would result in a child with another woman.
I had thought he was too busy performing to visit me abroad.
But in reality, he had been busy taking care of a pregnant woman–Emma Martinez.
Looking back, the signs had been there.
But I had chosen to ignore them.
Now, finally, the truth was out. We didn’t have to keep guessing anymore.
Sarah looked at me with sympathy.
“Girl, just find someone new. You deserve better.”
Her expression made me laugh.
But the next moment, tears fell from my lashes onto the back of my hand.
I tilted my head back and covered my eyes with my hand.
A long, deep sigh echoed in my ears.
My parents began seeing the guests out.
The once grand banquet hall now held fewer than ten people.
Only then did Mason’s parents approach me.
His mother, Alice, took my hand and said, “Olivia, you’re a good girl. What happened today is Mason’s fault.”
“We failed to discipline our son.”
“To get involved with his own professor like that… Don’t worry. I’ll handle it-”
“There’s no need,” Finterrupted her.
“She’s still your family. This is your family’s business. The Garcia family won’t get involved.”
“Today’s already been chaotic enough, so I won’t see you out.”
My tone made it clear I was asking them to leave. The look on the Lewises‘ faces turned sour, but they couldn’t argue.
Just before they left, Mason’s father, Lucian, made one last attempt.

“Olivia, I’ll give you thirty percent of the company’s shares if you’il just give the child a name.”
“From now on, just treat him as your stepson. If our two families work together, we can cover up this scandal-
I laughed.
“Mr. Lewis, why should the Garcia family tarnish our name just to cover your family’s mess?”
His face darkened with shame.
Seeing how resolute I was, they left with their tails between their legs.
What I didn’t expect was to see them again–at our university reunion.
”
Mason and Emma stood openly in the center of the private room, graciously accepting everyone’s praise and congratulations.
“So Mason’s actually the second son of the Lewis family? Wow, he hid it well. Was he trying to experience life like a commoner before his professor ‘rescued‘ him?”
“Professor, come on! You already have a child together. You should’ve invited us to your wedding ages ago.”
Emma smiled warmly and nodded.
“You all know Mason’s situation is a bit special. Tonight’s casual–just enjoy yourselves, it’s our treat.”
