Chapter 2
Cheers erupted around the room. Mason remained silent, standing beside Emma, his right hand gently resting on the child.
His face glowed with the softness of a new father.
I clenched my fists, a coldness settling over me.
The way they shamelessly accepted blessings from our classmates felt like a slap in the face.
Just yesterday, he had almost become my fiancé.
And now here he was, holding another woman’s child and soaking in everyone’s well wishes.
I suddenly felt the whole scene was absurd.
Sarah, standing beside me, looked even angrier than I was.
She grabbed a glass of wine and walked over with a mocking tone.
“Ms. Martinez, when exactly did you and Mason get married and have a child?”
She emphasized the last four words with a pointed edge.
Emma’s expression changed, and the others turned to look at Sarah.
Then Sarah dropped the real bomb.
“Did you know Mason already had a fiancée? Tell me, how does it feel, knowingly becoming the third party? Tell me, professor, is it thrilling to be a mistress?”
Her words exploded in everyone’s ears like a thunderclap.
People who had just been congratulating Emma began quietly stepping back, whispering among themselves.
Mason quickly stepped in front of Emma, shielding her from their stares.
“Before you go around making accusations, I suggest you stop talking. Don’t cause trouble for yourself when you don’t know the full
story.”
Sarah was unfazed by his warning.
Mason shot me a fierce glare, then turned back to the crowd.
“Since we’re all here, let me clarify things. Yes, Olivia Garcia and I had an engagement–but it was arranged by our families. It never reflected my personal wishes.”
“As an independent person, I believe I have the right to pursue love.”
“It’s the twenty–first century. I refuse to let my life be buried under some arranged marriage.”
He lifted his chin slightly, exuding arrogance born of wealth.
Some of the girls in the room looked ready to cheer him on.
I hadn’t expected him to throw me under the bus just to divert attention.
He still thought I was the same fiancée who would silently endure everything for him.
I let out a cold laugh and stepped forward.
“So what you’re saying is, you never agreed to the engagement. Then why didn’t you reject it outright?”
“Do I need to list all the benefits your Lewis family gained from the arrangement? That child of yours isn’t a newborn–how many chances did you have to come clean before yesterday’s engagement party? You had plenty.”

“Don’t act so noble, Mason. You’re disgusting.”
He stayed silent, his face darkening.
Emma, however, began to panic.
“Olivia, it’s not what you think. Mason wanted to tell you a long time ago, but you were preparing to go abroad. He didn’t want to affect your performance. He planned to explain everything when you came back.”
“He was afraid you’d hate him. It’s not like he never had feelings for you.”
“He kept it from you because he didn’t want to hurt you.”
Her self–righteous speech made me want to laugh.
The two of them really were a perfect match–equally nauseating.
Sarah couldn’t hold back any longer and launched into another verbal attack.
“Wow, from the sound of it, Ms. Martinez, Olivia should be thanking you two cheaters on her knees?”
“Shut up!” Mason snapped.
“Nothing happened between me and Emma while we were still students!”
Sarah scoffed.
“So what? That still doesn’t change the fact that you were her student! That’s something you’ll never outrun.”
Mason turned to look at me. His lips parted, as if he wanted to explain, but in the end, he simply took Emma’s hand and walked away.
