Chapter 3
Emma had originally been my professor.
Then, in our sophomore year, Mason told me he wanted to switch majors to be in the same program as me. Soon after, he transferred into my class.
That was when I noticed how often he visited Emma’s office.
Sensing something off, I brought it up once.
He just laughed and wrapped his arms around my waist.
“You little jealous thing! I switched to your major just so I could spend more time with you.”
“I’m just making up the classes I missed. How could you even suspect me?”
I frowned.
“Mason, I’m a woman too. The way Emma looks at you isn’t exactly innocent.”
“You’re way too possessive. What, now that I’m with you, I can’t even be looked at by another woman?”
“Olivia, your thinking is really dangerous.”
At the time, I couldn’t tell if it was really just jealousy or something else.
So I let it go.
But looking back now, it was clear–Emma must’ve had feelings for him long ago.
It was just her position that stopped her from making the first move.
And to get Mason–despite him already being engaged–and even have his child? That took some serious nerve.
That night, I went home and packed up everything related to Mason.
For the more valuable gifts, I thought about it, then boxed them up and arranged for someone to return them to him the next day.
But what I hadn’t expected was for his father to show up again after receiving the items.
“Olivia, look at these gifts. Mason really put thought into all of them.”
“Each one shows how much he cared. He made a mistake, sure, but who doesn’t when they’re young?”
“Nowadays, who hasn’t dated around before marriage? Think about it—our families go way back. What I said yesterday still stands. What do you say?”
I forced a smile, lips curled into a mocking grin.
“Mr. Lewis, why don’t you ask Mrs. Lewis–if you had a child with someone else before getting married, would she still have married you?”
“It might be normal to date around these days, but since the day our engagement was set, I never got involved with any other man. Because to me, I didn’t want to hurt two people at once.”
I hadn’t expected that Lucian would bring Mason along, too.
As soon as I finished speaking, Mason stepped out from behind the door.
“But you never asked what really happened back then. You never asked why I did it!”
“Olivia, would you believe me if I told you I had my reasons?”
“Now you’re acting like it’s all black and white. Isn’t that just another kind of cruelty to me?”

I let him finish everything he had to say, but kept my expression calm.
“Mason, this is me giving both of us the last bit of dignity.”
Mason broke down completely.
He yelled, losing all composure.
“But I don’t want dignity–I want a wife who loves me deeply!”
“I want to marry someone real, not some high–society heiress who runs her life like a machine!”
My heart clenched suddenly.

But Mason was already like a snapped bowstring, beyond control.
His voice was hoarse.
“If you hadn’t shackled Olivia with all your damn rules, molded her into some rigid doll–we might’ve had our happy ending.”
“This is all your fault!”
