Chapter 1
In the sixth year of being in love with my Alpha mate, Kael Maddox, I found a velvet ring box holding pocket of his coat.

On my birthday, I was filled with anticipation. But instead of a proposal, I saw a photo posted in Instagram. It was Kael and another she–wolf standing before the altar.
I rushed to the scene, only to witness him sever our mate bond with his own hands… and form a new one with that she–wolf. All the lycans around them were cheering.
I didn’t scream or cry like I used to. I simply dialed my Alpha father’s number.
“Dad, I agree to the alliance with Velmoor Pack. Let’s go ahead and start preparing the mating ceremony.
There was a pause on the other end, then joy filled his voice.

“My good girl, you’ve finally come to your senses. The most important thing in choosing a mate is status compatibility. Those outsider Alphas are fine for a fling, but it’s impossible for us to stay with them for life.”
I gave a quiet nod in response and stood alone at the Luna Temple, watching Kael and that she–wolf kiss beneath a rain of blessings.
Everyone around them cheered, but I remained still, like a lifeless puppet.
The scene clawed at my soul like talons.
My father must’ve heard the commotion in the background because he urged me, “So when will you come back to Argent Crest Pack? Go meet Alpha Tiber Solgrave of Velmoor Pack. They’ve been pressing us to form a mate bond.’
“In three days,” I replied. “Let me finish things here, and I’ll head back to Argent Crest Pack right after.”
After I hung up, maybe it was because I stood out too much from the joyful crowd around me that Kael, whose hands trembled as he slipped the ring onto the she–wolf’s finger, finally looked up and saw me.
Across the sea of people, our eyes met from afar.
There was a flicker of surprise on his face. He frowned slightly, then quietly led the she–wolf back to their seats.
Roses, champagne, the soft sound of a romantic piano piece, and the glow of candlelight surrounded them…
In all six years I had been with him, he had never taken me anywhere like this.
I turned and left.
Kael’s closest friends were there too. The photo I’d seen had come from one of their social media.
Just as I was leaving, I heard them whistling and clapping.
“You two really are a perfect match. After all these years, you finally made it!”
“Come on, Let’s raise our glasses, and wish this couple a happy marriage. May lovers always find each other and be together!”
I let out a bitter laugh in my heart.
In the six years I had stood by Kael’s side, none of his brothers or friends had known about us. Yet they all knew about his relationship with that she–wolf.
A bitter sting rose quietly in my heart.
It was my birthday today.
The joy I had felt when I first found the ring in his coat pocket had now turned into poison that burned through me.
When I got back home, I saw a birthday cake delivered by Gamma waiting at the pack house door. On the card outside the box was Kael’s handwriting: Happy Birthday to my darling. Wishing you all the best.

Gamma gave me an envious smile. “Your mate is really sweet. He ordered the most expensive cake from our store–and he even wrote the card himself!”
I pushed open the door and casually tossed the cake onto the table.
So he had remembered it was my birthday. But what had he done today, on this very day?
I collapsed onto the couch, exhausted, tears brimming in my eyes as I stared at the empty room.
Everything in this house still held traces of our life together, yet my mate had bought an engagement ring… and proposed to
else.
Now, looking at that cake only made me feel sick to my stomach.

I sat on the couch for a long time, so long I nearly lost track of time until the door of the pack house suddenly opened.
