Chapter 6
That night, Dorian went home with Lacey.
The next morning, I left the ring he’d put on my finger during his proposal on the coffee table.
In the taxi to the airport, Dorian’s parents called me repeatedly.
I ignored every call.
Dorian must have sobered up.
He texted, asking when I’d arrive, saying I must look beautiful today and that he was so excited.
Thinking of those matching running shoes, I silently blocked him.
Just before boarding the plane, an unfamiliar number called.
I answered, and Dorian’s voice scolded me
the guests were waiting for me alone.

I found it laughable. A filthy man who was tangled up with another woman the night before the wedding–how dare he question me?
The plane’s takeoff announcement sounded just then.
His voice froze, and he asked nervously where I was.
Realizing I couldn’t hear, he fumbled to hang up and text me.
In the second before he disconnected, I said calmly, “Dorian, I can hear.”
Before he could react, I ended the call.
I sent him the recording of him and Lacey in their passionate entanglement.
Then I turned off my phone, put on an eye mask, and fell into a deep sleep.
In my dream, a fire lit up half the city.
A young Dorian screamed for help in the flames.

My parents rushed into the fire to save him, blood streaming from their mouths and noses as a collapsing desk crushed them, yet they still pushed him toward the door.
A young me struggled to drag Dorian out of the fire, only for a burning doorframe to fall, deafening my ears.
Then, a teenage Dorian, dragging a broken leg, knelt before me, swearing solemnly,
“Mireya, I swear, I’ll never betray you!”
The chaotic dream jolted me awake, drenched in cold sweat.
So, Mom and Dad, was it all worth it?
When I woke again, the plane was about to land.
Turning on my phone, I saw over a hundred missed calls and messages from unknown
numbers.
I didn’t bother looking. In the crowd of blonde hair and blue eyes, I spotted my uncle instantly.
Beside him stood my gray–haired grandparents.
My parents‘ death didn’t just rob young me of my safe haven–it brought unspeakable pain to these two elders.
“Mireya, my dear child, you’ve suffered…”
My grandma lovingly touched my face, so similar to my mother’s, tears streaming
down her cheeks.
All the grievances of the past days erupted in an instant.
I hugged her tightly, sobbing uncontrollably.
She gently patted my back. “Mireya, don’t be afraid. You’re home now…
They shielded me in their midst as we walked out of the airport.
A few steps later, my uncle’s phone rang.
It was from the Dorian’s parents from the Roselure Pack.

He looked at me, troubled. “Mireya, the Roselure Pack has been calling me nonstop. I don’t know what happened between you, so I didn’t answer.”
“But no matter what, we’ll always be your support.”
I nodded and took his phone, answering the call.
No matter how Dorian treated me, the Dorian’s parents from the Roselure Pack had
never done me wrong.
“Mireya, where are you? I’m worried sick! Did Dorian upset you? Come back, and I’ll scold him for you, okay?”
Before I could respond, the phone was snatched away.
Dorian’s voice was thick with bitterness and excitement. “Mireya?”
“It’s me. What’s up?”
He paused, then said in a trembling, incredulous voice, “You can really hear. Thank God, I thought I was hallucinating before.”
“I saw the recording you sent, but Mireya, it’s a misunderstanding. Come back. After all these years, I have so much to say…‘
I fell silent, confused.
After regaining my hearing, I learned Dorian had always seen me as a stumbling block
to his happiness.
Despite his parents‘ pressure to marry me, which I was unaware of, he resisted by running off with another woman, hurting me in the process.
Now that I’d let him go to be with Lacey, what was he playing at?
Was it like their flirting, where they needed me nearby or on the phone to make it thrilling?
Did his runaway act need my tears and collapse in the background to prove their love was priceless?
The more I stayed silent, the more frantic he became, like a man drowning without an

audience.
“That recording was faked!”
“Believe me, please. You can’t imagine how scared I was seeing the empty house and
the moonstone ring on the coffee table!”
He sounded so sincere.
But I couldn’t help letting out a scoff. “What, Dorian? Without my tears, your runaway act isn’t thrilling enough?”
“Or do you
feel unaccustomed without your lapdog following you, begging for scraps?”
“Didn’t you think the whole world was morally blackmailing you into marrying me?
Now I’m gone. No one’s forcing you anymore.”
“I wish you and Lacey would stay together forever.”
“And that recording? I recorded it myself.”
With that, I pulled the phone away.
Dorian was desperately pleading. “What runaway act?!”
“Mireya, you’ve misunderstood me. Let’s talk-”
I didn’t let him finish, handing the phone back to my uncle.
The three of them looked grim.
That call was enough for them to piece together what had happened.
My grandma said nothing, just kept patting my hand, tears streaming down her face.
My uncle couldn’t help cursing, “Beast.”
I forced a smile. “It’s all in the past.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll never forgive him or go back to him.”
I promised them.
