Chapter 5
The room fell deathly silent. Every pair of eyes turned to the door.
“No way… That’s him! The one they used to call the Devil of the Miller family–the power behind the throne! The Millers wouldn’t be where they are today without his ruthless tactics.”
“But didn’t he… die five years ago? Wasn’t he cursed?”
Rowan Miller stood there in a perfectly tailored suit, exuding a quiet, deadly calm. He walked
toward me, framed by the light.
As his clear, steady gaze met mine, my heart began to race.
I finally saw him again.
In my past life, I didn’t learn the truth until the very end: Rowan, Adrian’s uncle, had once saved one of Poseidon’s chosen and was granted ten years of protection in return. He’d lived to thirty–five
because of it.
And before he died, he made a deal with Poseidon himself.
He offered up his soul and his chance at peace in the afterlife… all in exchange for one lifetime of peace and joy for me.
He had loved me that deeply. And I’d never known. My world had revolved around Adrian, a man
who never loved me back.
The first day I came back to life, I’d messaged Rowan, telling him I was going to marry him.
That I would marry no one but him. But he never replied.
But I’d gambled right. He was here.
“Anyone here have a death wish?”
Rowan’s icy gaze swept across the guards. He took off his jacket and gently draped it over my shoulders, carefully straightening the fabric. His touch was protective.
Adrian’s face darkened. He’d never met Rowan before.
“Who the hell are you? You’ve got a lot of nerve crashing a Miller event. Tired of living?”
His glare deepened as he watched Rowan take my hand.

“Are you deaf? Who the hell do you think you are, waltzing into my house? Somebody teach this clown a lesson!”
Then he turned that fury on me.
“Serena, I really underestimated you. Seducing some stray mutt just to make me jealous? You think this will work on me? Oh, I get it. Playing hard to get now? I already promised you—you could stay by my side even after I married Lydia. Wasn’t that enough? You just had to push it? Fine. You want ruthless? I’ll show you ruthless.”
The guards looked at one another uneasily before slowly surrounding us.
Rowan’s voice was low, calm–like water running through a mountain spring. “Close your eyes.
I did as he said. Then the sound hit me–bone–crunching thuds, shouts, screams. The air filled with pain.
“Let’s go, Serena.”
I opened my eyes. Rowan’s suit was still spotless. Not a wrinkle in sight. His hand was warm and steady in mine, and somehow, just holding it made me feel safe.
Adrian’s face contorted with rage. He turned and kicked one of the downed guards.
“Useless! Every damn one of you! You think you can walk in here and walk out like nothing happened?!”
“All guards! Get him! Make sure he pays for this!”

Rowan chuckled, his smile faint. “You’ve grown bold, Adrian. You don’t even recognize your uncle anymore? Didn’t they teach manners?”
“Uncle? My uncle’s dead!”
Just then, trembling voices of Sebastian and Vivian called out from the entrance.
“Rowan? It really is you?! You’re alive?”
“How is this possible?”
Rowan gave a polite nod.

“Ten years ago, I rescued a sea turtle sacred to Poseidon. He granted me ten years of protection. Today is the last day.”
