Chapter 27
“Yes, it was agony.”
Caitlin showed no mercy.
い
This relationship had shattered long ago–she refused to drag it out any longer.
Yet her words pierced Xander’s heart like a sharp knife, leaving a choking
pain.
“What about him?”
He forced a bitter smile, gesturing toward Javier beside Caitlin. “Did you fall for him?”
Both froze at his question.
Javier glanced down at Caitlin, secretly eager to hear her answer.
But Caitlin fell silent.
Did she?
At most, it was just a crush.
After all, he wasn’t just handsome but also more capable and refined than other men. Having feelings for him was only natural.
But she couldn’t answer truthfully.
Since Xander cared so much, she’d seize this chance to crush his hopes-
without openly using Javier.

Caitlin stared coldly at him. “We’re done. You’ve no right to meddle in
who I love or marry from now on.”
The reply was ambiguous-
neither confirming nor denying affection.
Yet to Xander, it screamed she was shielding Javier.
“I’ll meddle anyway!!”
He furiously smashed a nearby vase.
Bodyguards swarmed in, pinning Javier to the floor with blows.
Caitlin wanted to stop him, but he grabbed her.
“Do you like him that much?”
Xander’s eyes burned with agony, yet held a stubborn defiance: “If one of us has to die, who would you choose?”
“What do you mean?”
As soon as Caitlin spoke, he strode over and hauled Javier up, both men stepping onto the stone railing.
The implication… she understood instantly.
Caitlin’s pupils constricted sharply: “Are you insane?! Threatening me with Javier’s life?”
“No.” He chuckled lightly. “Both our lives.”
“I’m gambling… betting whether there’s any place for me in your heart.”

Nearly laughing from rage: “Xander, I won’t play this game! If Javier gets hurt, do you think you’ll leave Chicago alive?!”
“Doesn’t matter…” Xander laughed into the wind, murmuring: “Without you, I don’t want to live anyway.”
After speaking, he pulled Javier and fell backward.
“No!!”
Caitlin’s heart leapt to her throat.
She rushed forward to grab, and luckily caught Javier’s hand in time. Using the force, she pulled herself up.
But Xander fell onto the first floor.
“Caitlin…” he murmured, his mouth full of blood, his voice as faint as a sigh, “You really don’t love me anymore.”
Caitlin looked down, her nails digging deep into her palms.
She watched as he lay in a pool of blood, as his pupils gradually dilated, as he was carried away…
But her heart remained unmoved.
Three months later, at the banquet.
The Schmidt Group successfully developed a new product, which became the top seller within a month.

Chapter 27
Insiders all say Caitlin is a dark horse.
And she’s handpicked by Javier.
“Congratulations.” Javier approached Caitlin, clinked his glass against hers, took a sip, then added: “His condition… not great.”
Caitlin’s hand trembled around her wineglass.

“Last time he broke his leg, doctors said recovery was still possible with treatment and rehab.”
“But…” Javier’s gaze fixed on her.
“He refuses treatment, drinks heavily. Several alcohol poisonings nearly killed him. Now mental health issues surfaced–might need
institutionalization.”
“Care to visit him?”
Caitlin remained silent for a long time.
She finally smiled and said, “No, this is his life lesson. He must face it himself.”
As for hers, she’d long since handed in the paper.
And what’s more, it was a perfect score.
