Chapter 7
After I pressed charges against Seraphine, Cassian showed up again, shamelessly begging me to drop the case.[]
“Lyra, she just lost her head for a second. Can’t you let this go?“]
I actually laughed at the audacity. “Lost her head? Then she can clear it in prison.“[]
“Lyra, she’s just a girl–how’s she supposed to survive in there? I’ll get on my knees if that’s what it takes.“[]
And just like that, he dropped to his knees right there. Seeing him grovel like that sent a thrill of satisfaction through me.[]
“You could crawl on your belly, hell, Seraphine herself could beg–it wouldn’t matter. Now get out.“[]
After Cassian slunk away defeated, my lawyer came to the pack medical center.]
He laid out the case for me. Bottom line–Seraphine wasn’t walking away from this one.[]
I saw her again at the courthouse. She had the nerve to smirk at me. “Cassian got me the best lawyer. Hope you’re ready to lose.“[]
I just smiled and glanced at my attorney.[]
His expression didn’t change. “Don’t worry about it.“[]
I nodded, feeling completely secure.]
The smirk died on Seraphine’s face the moment she heard my lawyer’s name announced in court.[]
I’d hired Dorian Whitlock–the best in the business. He’d never lost a case.
- se.
Most people couldn’t even get a meeting with him, but for me? He was always available.[]
His mom and mine had been best friends since college. He’d been like a big brother to me my whole life.[]
Predictably, Seraphine got three years for assault with a deadly weapon.[]
Plus she had to cover all my medical expenses.[]
When the judge read the verdict, she collapsed like a rag doll.]
After I healed, I formally requested to sever our mate bond. Cassian knew the Elders would side with me–and strip him of rank–so he finally agreed to a private dissolution.[]
The day I got those divorce papers, it felt like a weight lifting off my chest.
My whole body, my whole soul felt lighter.
This time, I was going to live for myself. I’d wasted my youth on Cassian–the rest of my life belonged to me.[]
To thank Dorian, I invited him to dinner. I figured he’d be too swamped with work, but he actually showed up.[]
That surprised me. The guy was famous for being married to his job. Ever since he started practicing law, I hardly saw him–he always turned me down, claiming he was too busy.[]

Chapter 7
But tonight felt like old times. I couldn’t stop talking, and he just listened, occasionally putting food on my plate.
After dinner, he mentioned he was thinking of visiting his parents anyway, so he’d drive me home.[]
Our families lived next door to each other. Back in the day, my mom bought our house specifically so she wouldn’t have to be separated from her best friend.[]
When we pulled up, I invited him in. “My parents haven’t seen you in forever. They’re always asking about you.“]
“Sure.” He didn’t even hesitate.[]
We were heading toward the house when a voice called out behind us.]]
“Lyra.”
I turned around. Cassian.
He shuffled over, looking like hell. “Lyra, just give me one more chance?“]
“Let me be the one chasing you this time. I swear I’ll never contact Seraphine again. I’ll cut all ties with her completely.“[]
His head hung low, couldn’t even look me in the eye. All that old arrogance was gone.
That confidence had come from my endless tolerance, my constant forgiveness–his certainty that I’d never actually leave him.[]
