Chapter 19
The air in the corridor grew thin instantly.
Benjamin stared at me in stunned silence.
I continued. “Benjamin, everyone gets emotionally drained. I’m tired of us–completely done.”
Robert looked equally startled.
A slow smile curved his lips, though his eyes held a hint of mischief.
He pulled me into an embrace. “When a junior confesses first, I can hardly refuse.”
Benjamin felt like a gaping hole had torn through his chest.
Could it be nothing was as he’d imagined? Had changing certain events in this life sent everything off course?
Could Elizabeth truly have fallen for someone else?
He couldn’t grasp it. Elizabeth had sworn with conviction she’d love only him this lifetime.
I slammed his stars onto the ground.
“Benjamin, stop doing meaningless things.”
“That female buddy of yours, Victoria, is pretty great. Don’t miss out on someone who truly likes you.”

“I’m going to class now.”
Benjamin stared at the stars scattered across the floor, ignoring how the glass shards might cut his hands.
He simply crouched down, gathering the fallen stars one by one.
Elizabeth didn’t know.
The day he learned of her death, he felt like the sky had collapsed.
Since she left, he’d vowed to make her regret everything if they ever met again.
Yet he knew he’d forgive her the moment she showed remorse.
But after discovering she was alive, he started acquiring her company – even paying five times its market value.
Not only that, he deliberately intercepted her resources and snatched away her commercial deals.
All he ever wanted was to hear her say: “Benjamin, I regret it.”
She knew he was hard on the outside but soft inside. If she just swallowed her pride and gave a reasonable explanation,
he would have forgiven her.
But he never expected Elizabeth’s stubbornness to exceed his imagination.
While battling bone cancer, she endured excruciating pain every waking moment.

Even then, she never breathed a word about it to him.
He had tried to forget Elizabeth,
But he couldn’t.
The moment he closed his eyes, their first encounter would replay-
his basketball striking Elizabeth’s head.
Amidst this teen drama opening, her first words stunned everyone:
“Take me to the hospital. You’ll be held responsible if anything’s wrong.”
The classmates‘ jeering died down instantly.
On the way to the hospital, Benjamin’s buddies texted him.
“Dude, is she trying to trap you? This chick might be after your money.”
–
Another added: “Maybe she’s into you. Clever move though – getting hurt like that would definitely make you notice her.”
Benjamin had considered these possibilities himself.
After all, plenty of girls tried creative ways to catch his eye.
But during class later, he overheard some female classmates chatting.
“Did you hear about Elizabeth’s family situation?”
“Her dad died of a tumor during her senior year. Her mom couldn’t handle it and took her own life.”

“Now she’s supporting her sick grandma and kid sister through school.”
“No wonder she’s either working part–time jobs or busting her ass for scholarships.”

Suddenly Benjamin understood why she’d insisted on a full check–up after the basketball hit her head – she couldn’t afford any medical surprises.
Because she couldn’t afford even the slightest mishap.
At the same age, she was burdened with so much
