Nearby, Emily suddenly collapsed while clutching her stomach. “It hurts… Benjamin, I’m not blessed enough to carry your child.”
Benjamin rushed over in panic, holding her tight. “Don’t say that! The fortune–teller said I’m destined for wealth and honor. Our child will live a full life.”
As he finished speaking, he seemed to remember something and snapped his head up to look at me.
“Sophia, return the crystal necklace to me.”
This crystal necklace was what Benjamin sought from twenty witches when I lay gravely ill, all to safeguard my life.
The day I awoke, Benjamin vowed with devotion–as long as we lived, his love and this crystal necklace would endure.
Now, he withdraws that love so easily.
How fleeting his forever turned out to be.
Benjamin remained icy despite my reddened eyes.
“You’ve recovered. Why fight a child over this?”
At his glance, an aide seized me. Benjamin wrenched the necklace from my neck, leaving a crimson welt.
I composed myself and vanished into the night.
Home again, my father called.

“Sweetie, regulations allow you to join the military. I’ve secured you a position at Walter Reed. Please resign from your current job first.”
Early next morning, I went to see HR Wendy Johnson.
Wendy looked stunned.
“Dr. Sophia, are you truly resigning to give your position to your sister- in–law? She lacks clinical experience and can’t handle this role.”
“When Benjamin visited recently, I thought he was joking.”
She looked at Wendy blankly. Before speaking, Benjamin’s voice sounded behind her.
“Sophia, I knew you wouldn’t make things difficult for me.
“Emily’s expecting a child. Commuting from that small clinic in the neighboring town is impractical. I’m transferring her here to swap positions with you.”
“This is temporary. Once you get downgraded, I’ll arrange your promotion swiftly.”
The HR manager sighed. “Dr. Sophia, regulations require personal consent for transfers. You still have time to reconsider…”
“Don’t bother!”
“Don’t bother!”
Benjamin and I spoke in unison.
I signed without hesitation.
Wendy asked, “Benjamin, where should I put for the receiving institution?”

Benjamin answered without hesitation, “Leave it blank. Reserve the spot for Emily’s placement.”
“For the next month, have Sophia accompany Emily to learn hospital operations.”
“I’ll decide the receiving institution later.”
Wendy glanced at me awkwardly, and I gave a silent nod.
“Follow Benjamin’s orders.“.
I never intended him to know my assignment was at Walter Reed. This spared me a lot of trouble.
Benjamin was pleased with my reaction, reaching out to touch the blood scab on my neck.
“Still hurting?”
I shook my head.
Guilt flashed across Benjamin’s face. “Sophia, I’ll come see you when I’m free.”
Not wanting to prolong this, I gave a noncommittal reply and left.
The following days passed without any sign of Benjamin.
I relished the peace, quietly packing my belongings.
