Chapter 12
Unlike the harsh cold of the city, the weather in Norway was lovely.
As soon as Stella stepped out of the airport, she saw her parents waiting with a bouquet of roses.[]
“Stella!”
Mrs. Rivers pulled her into her arms, saying with concern: “You’ve lost weight. []
Stella’s eyes suddenly turned red as she choked out: “Dad, Mom.“]
Mrs. Rivers‘ eyes also reddened: “Oh, sweetheart, let’s go home.“[]
Mr. Rivers snorted coldly without saying anything, but consciously took Stella’s luggage.
When she had insisted on staying in the city, Mr. Rivers had strongly opposed it: “You’ve liked that boy for so many years, and he never noticed. Now his brother died in a car accident because of you, and suddenly he says he likes you. Think about it–does any of this make sense?!“]]
Unfortunately, she had been blinded by love at the time, with only Ryan on her mind.[]
For Ryan’s sake, she had argued with her father for the first time in her life.
She’d even torn up her acceptance letter to a prestigious foreign university just to stay in the city.
This had made Mr. Rivers so angry that he flew out of the country overnight and cut off their father–daughter relationship.[]
Thinking about this, Stella felt overwhelmed with guilt.[]
She took the initiative to ease the tension, bowing her head to apologize to her father: “Dad, I’m sorry. I know I was wrong. Can you forgive me just this once?“]
Mr. Rivers‘ expression finally softened, though he still sounded frustrated: “Fine, fine. You can teach a person all you want, but they won’t learn–but life teaches you in one go! It’s good you’re home!“[]
With that, he got into the back seat and pretended to close his eyes and rest.[]
In reality, Stella had already seen the redness at the corners of his eyes.[]
Mrs. Rivers laughed and comforted her: “Don’t mind your dad. After all these years, he’s still so stubborn! You don’t know–the day he heard you were coming back, he didn’t sleep all night!“[]
“He prepared so many gifts for you early on, telling everyone ‘my daughter is coming home,‘ as if he was afraid people wouldn’t know he had a precious daughter.“[]
Ethan also teased: “That’s not all–Dad’s been working overtime these past few days to give the Mitchell Group hell, just to get revenge for you.”
It was like they were back to the old days when nothing had happened, all four of them laughing and talking.[]
A father who seemed tough but was actually soft hearted, a mother who was always thoughtful and gentle, and a brother who was completely devoted to his sister.[]

Stella felt like she was the happiest person in the world.[]
Thinking about how she’d been foolish enough to abandon her family and willingly play the role of someone’s wife, she found it laughable.]
With people who love you, you’ve already won just by existing.
With people who don’t love you, even if you cut out your heart to show them, they still won’t believe a word you say.
Over the next month, Stella was pampered like a little princess.[]
Mr. Rivers canceled all his work and spent every day playing chess, drinking tea, and having heart–to–heart talks with her, patiently guiding her through her healing.
Mrs. Rivers cooked different delicious meals for her every day, making her plump and healthy.]
Ethan brought her a gift home from work every day–sometimes a bouquet of roses, sometimes an expensive necklace, sometimes just a simple black card…]]
Stella was both touched and exasperated, couldn’t help but complain: “You guys don’t need to be so nervous. I’m not dying or anything–you can just do your normal stuff.“[]
To this, Ethan replied expressionlessly: “Princess, you’re the only daughter of the Rivers family. You should have everything others have, and even things others don’t have!“]
After another month of this blissful life, Stella passed the audition for the Norwegian Orchestra and became an official violinist.]
One evening after dinner, Mrs. Rivers pulled Stella into the study.[]
“Stella, there’s something we’ve never told you. Now that your life is getting back on track, it’s time you knew about this.“]]
The atmosphere suddenly became serious as Stella unconsciously straightened her back, listening carefully to her mother.
“When you were very young, we arranged an engagement between you and the eldest son of the Stone family from the south side of town. But then they moved abroad, so the matter was put on hold.“[]
“But recently, the Stone family contacted us again, hoping you could meet with their eldest son–you know, to see if you two are compatible.“]
Mrs. Rivers looked somewhat troubled, seeming to worry about putting her daughter in a difficult position, and quickly explained: “Mom’s not trying to force you to marry anyone. I just want you two to meet and get to know each other.“[]
“After all, your father and I will grow old someday and can’t be with you forever. You still need to find a suitable partner to be by your side.”
Stella thought for a moment.]

Since leaving Ryan, she no longer had any expectations or fantasies about love.[]
Marrying anyone would just be settling, but if it would benefit the Rivers family, why not give it a try?]
