Chapter 9
He froze mid–movement, frowning as he looked at me.
“Am I dreaming again?”
Then he turned his head and flopped back down, limbs sprawled, covering his eyes with one arm.
He let out a long sigh. “Forget it.”
“It’s not a dream.” I reached out and pinched his cheek. “Come on, Ryan. Let’s go get married.”
His frown eased a little. I pinched harder. His frown disappeared completely, and he shot up like a spring.
“That hurt?” He stared at me in disbelief, then pinched his own thigh, muttering to himself, “N–not a dream…”
“Exactly. Not a dream.” I smiled at him. “Don’t you wanna marry me? Better get yourself together.”
He looked completely dazed. But he obediently cleaned himself up and took something for the hangover.
Then he sat across from me, still looking confused. “How did you suddenly change your mind overnight?”
I sighed. “Because someone had a secret crush on me but never said anything. Made me think you wanted to marry me for practical
reasons.”

“I didn’t dare say yes.”
“What?” He looked stunned. “Me?”
“Who else?” I huffed and told him everything my mom said.
“Alright… Not far off from what your mom guessed,” he admitted. “But I really thought it was obvious I loved you.”
“Well, from my side, it felt like we barely knew each other.” I crossed my arms. “Even love at first sight needs a build–up, you know? You came at me full force from the jump.”
He scratched his nose.
“Okay… yeah, I couldn’t help it.” Then he looked at me, a little cautious. “So… does this mean my secret crush finally gets a response?”
I thought for a second. “Of course it does.
“If you’d just told me from the start, it would’ve happened even sooner.
We stared at each other for a beat.
“So… when are we getting married?”
“The sooner, the better.”
Walking out of the City Hall, it all felt surreal. The marriage license in my hand felt light as air, like I was dreaming.
As for Ryan, who’d been trying to act calm ever since sobering up, he cleared his throat.
“Even if this was a spur–of–the–moment decision… we’ve got the license now. No take–backs.”

“Marrying a guy like you? Who’d want to take it back?” I waved the
license in front of him. “I should hide this thing, so no one tries to steal you from me.”
He clearly wanted to laugh, but this time, he held it in
After a pause, he said, “So… maybe later you can move your stuff to my place?”
Then, like he realized how that sounded, he rubbed his nose and added, “I mean, the security’s good over there. No burglars.”
I burst out laughing. “Sure.”
A faint blush climbed up his ears.
We stood there staring at each other. exchanging about eight hundred glances. Then I spoke carefully. “By the way. Ryan…
“Can we keep the marriage a secret for now?”
He tensed immediately. “Why?”
“It’s not that I regret it or anything. I just… I married you to give you some sense of security. But now that it’s done. I feel like I need a bit of time to adjust.” I scratched my head. “I just want to ease into it. that’s all.”
He was already softening halfway through my sentence, the tight line of his mouth curving slightly.
But when he spoke, he still sounded a little pitiful. “For how long? Like, we can’t tell anyone?”
I thought about it. “How about one month? No one at all, okay?”

He clenched his fists like he was trying to psych himself up. I waited patiently for two minutes.
“Alright.” He finally gave in.
Looking at that still–slightly–wronged face, I couldn’t help but smile again.
Whoever said Ryan was cold and heartless–what a lie. This man’s just a total softie.
I tiptoed and patted his head.
“Good boy, honey.”
