Chapter 9
“You’re lying!” Arthur shouted.
“Elaine’s at home–she’s home-”
He fumbled for his phone, pulled up the home surveillance feed.
The house was quiet. Empty. All her things were gone.
The phone slipped from his hands, shattering on the floor.
“Where did it happen? Marcus–take me there now!”
His legs gave out. He collapsed against Marcus.
Vivian clutched at him. “Arthur, calm down! She’s faking it! She just wants attention-
SLAP!
Arthur’s hand struck her across the face. Blood trickled from her lip.
“You hit me?! For her?!” Vivian shrieked.
“Vivian Chase, listen carefully,” Arthur snarled. “Elaine is my lawfully wedded wife.”
“She’s in danger. Watch your mouth.”
“Or I swear to God…‘
})
He was shaking, bloodshot eyes wild.
Vivian backed away in horror.
Arthur turned to Marcus, voice cracking.
“Please… take me to her…”
He ignored Vivian completely and staggered toward the door.
They raced to the morgue.
“Mr. Phoenix,” the medical examiner said. “Your wife could have survived.”
