I did need someone to talk to, so I opened up.
“Actually, I already knew,” I told him quietly.
“I heard everything you and Arthur said.”
“Marcus… I can’t be a mother anymore, can I?”
He froze for a moment, then gave a sad smile.
He didn’t try to comfort me. Just drank, and let me vent.
When I finally told him I was leaving Arthur for good, he shattered his bottle on the ground.
“Then I’m in,” he said.
Marcus was fast.
Within an hour, he found a burned body in the city morgue that matched my build, got in touch with
the family, and arranged everything.
I handed him my jade bracelet, the one his mother–in–law had once given me.
“Hard to believe you didn’t plan this ahead of time,” I joked.
He grinned. “Call me when you’re safe.”
“When I get the chance, I’ll sneak away from Arthur and we’ll drink again.”

Six months later, Marcus kept his promise.
“You, a former socialite, hiding in a tiny town like this?” he teased.
His eyes swept across the flower shop. “You’re not bored to death?”
“How about I buy your whole inventory and you close early?”
I laughed. “Pass, Mr. Kingswell.”
“If you really like flowers, I can gift you one.”
