Chapter 11
“What, did the entire legal department drop dead overnight?” Julian’s voice was ice.
His assistant flinched, casting a nervous glance in his direction. “Sir, um… Ms. Monroe downsized the entire legal team a few weeks ago.”
Julian stared at him, stunned. “She what?”
“She said they were underperforming. And… no one dared to stop her.‘
Julian’s expression darkened. “No one thought to tell me?”
The assistant hesitated, eyes fixed on the floor. He knew the truth–but saying it would only make things worse.
Everyone had turned a blind eye to Delilah’s power trips, because Julian let her get away with it. Even Savannah, who’d been by his side for years, was overshadowed the moment Delilah came along. If someone like her could be pushed out, what chance did the rest of them have?
Julian pinched the bridge of his nose as tension coiled behind his eyes.
“Get Delilah in here. Now.”
As if summoned by name, a light knock came at the door–and her voice followed, sweet and polished.
“Julian? You’ve been working so hard today. I thought I’d stop by, keep you company for a little while.
eyes cold. The assistant stole a glance at his boss. Julian’s expression was unreadable, but his jaw was tight, his
This wasn’t the time for flirtation. And everyone in the building knew what those words usually meant: Delilah came with one goal in mind–and it had nothing to do with business..
“Come in,” Julian said curtly.
Delilah stepped inside, her heels clicking against the polished floor. But the moment she saw Julian’s face, the warmth in her smile
flickered.
Still, she composed herself quickly.
“I get it. You’re still upset about Savannah,” she began gently. “But you can’t blame me for wanting to protect you. Her sister’s a disaster. Savannah covered for her–that’s a legal risk. I was just looking out for you.”
Julian said nothing.
Delilah took a careful step forward. “Look, I’ll talk to her. I’ll help her see reason. She’s not thinking clearly right now.”
But the more she spoke, the darker Julian’s expression became.
And then, without warning, the file in his hand flew across the room, hitting her square in the face.
Delilah stumbled backward, yelping as her head struck the corner of the desk. Her eyes watered instantly as a red welt bloomed across
her cheek.
She looked up at him, eyes wide and brimming with tears—but when she met his gaze, there was no comfort there. Only ice.
“Julian…” her voice trembled, soft and stunned. “What is wrong with you?”
He let out a short, bitter laugh. “You really want to know?”
She blinked, confused.
“You fired my entire legal department without my approval. And now, a multi–million–dollar deal is at risk. So tell me, Delilah–what the hell am I supposed to do with that?”
Delilah blinked, then slowly got to her feet. The tears vanished just as fast. Her posture straightened, her tone changed.

“So this is about the legal team?” she said, chin tilted. “Julian, be serious. That department was filled with women who were clearly more interested in flirting than filing briefs.”
“I did you a favor.”
Julian stared at her like she’d lost her mind.
“Did you really think I kept you around for your skills?” he snapped. “You’ve never won a case, you barely remember your bar prep, and everything you know about law was spoon–fed to you by my team. The only thing you’ve got going for you is a pretty face.”
Delilah flinched like she’d been slapped. Her pride cracked visibly.
And she was just getting ready to strike back.
