Chapter 27
Maybe it was just Savannah’s imagination, but after she said those words, she thought she saw a glint of tears in Julian’s eyes.
But it didn’t matter anymore. She didn’t believe him.
Maybe a small part of her had wavered earlier – when he came all the way overseas to ap
apologize, to beg.
But now, knowing he’d been hiding the truth, hiding them, that last shred of softness vanished.
Julian’s voice shook, somewhere between anger and a choked breath.
“Savannah, I know you hate me. But you have to believe me—I never meant for it to be this way.”
“I just want one thing. Just one. After that, I’ll take you straight to them. Please.”
She narrowed her eyes. “What is it?”
For a second, his whole face lit up like he hadn’t expected her to even ask.
Carefully, almost nervously, he said, “Do you remember how we got together? The very beginning?”
Something flickered behind her eyes. But she said nothing.
Clearly, she remembered. She just had no interest in indulging him.
He let out a dry laugh, eyes filled with quiet bitterness, and went on anyway.
“I tricked you onto a boat, remember? Told you the motor was busted. Said we might not make it back alive.
”

“But even then, I told you–I didn’t care. If I died, but got to spend those last moments with you, it’d be worth it.
“And you? You said life only comes once. That we had to survive no matter what.”
“You even jumped into the freezing water and tried to paddle us back by hand.
Of course she remembered. She’d been furious afterward.
く
But Julian had made up for it–with fireworks over the lake and a vow whispered beneath the lights, like they had the whole world ahead of them.
And back then, Savannah believed him. Believed in them.
But looking back now? Maybe it was never real to him.
Maybe he’d only ever seen her as something to control. A pretty, obedient bird in a gilded cage.
And the moment someone younger, shinier came along–someone like Delilah–he tossed her aside like she meant nothing.
Even if he regretted it now, even if his apology was real, she didn’t know if it came from guilt or from pride.
Still… Savannah wasn’t above using his guilt to her advantage. Her expression softened, just slightly. “So? What do you want me to do?”
Julian smiled, the first real one in ages.
“I’m not asking for much. I just want us to sit in that same boat again. Like we did that night.”
“Just for a while. A few hours Hell, even fifteen minutes.”
“You do that—and I’ll take you straight to them. No games. I promise.”
She went quiet for a long moment.
Then finally, she nodded.

The relief in Julian’s eyes was immediate. He stepped toward her quickly, like they were still something real.
Like this meant something.
His voice was light, almost giddy.

my side.”
But the moment they reached the room–a hidden, locked–off basement–she understood. Delilah and Travis were chained in opposite corners, filthy, bloodied, barely recognizable.
Savannah gasped, heart stalling at the grotesque scene.
Yes, she hated them. And yes, this should have felt like justice.
But deep down, something twisted in her gut.
This wasn’t justice.
This wasn’t closure.
These two didn’t need to rot in a hole.
They needed to rot in prison.
