Chapter 13
The bedroom door was slightly ajar, and the arguing outside filtered faintly into my ears as I slept heavily.

Adrian and I had stayed up until 3 AM last night, rushing to meet an experiment deadline.
I was exhausted.
“Adrian…” I shuffled into slippers and walked out yawning. “What time is it? I feel like I just closed my eyes…‘
My gaze fell on the person holding flowers but looking furious, and my words stopped abruptly.
Blake? How did he get here?

Blake’s bloodshot eyes were fixed on me. “Emily! Who is he? You broke up with me because of him, didn’t you? You’re… you’re living together!”
He suddenly lunged forward, his voice hoarse and distorted. “You’re fucking sleeping together!!”
I looked at the enraged Blake and slightly curved my lips. “Yes, we’re sleeping together. So what? Does it concern you?”
His body swayed, the roses in his hands falling and scattering on the floor.
Faced with my cold tone, his voice suddenly softened, carrying urgent pleading, “Emily… let’s stop fighting, okay? Let’s make up. I know you’re mad at me, it’s all my fault.”
He was incoherent. “How could you fall for someone else? You must still be angry at me, right? You’re just trying to make me jealous…” “Mr. Parker,” Adrian’s cool voice interrupted. “Delusion is a disease. I suggest seeing a neurologist.”
“What the fuck are you!” Blake’s fury was completely ignited by Adrian’s mockery, and he swung at Adrian. “Taking advantage of the situation! Homewrecker! I’ve had ten years of childhood sweetheart love with her! How can you compare? What gives you the right!” Adrian reacted quickly, precisely catching Blake’s wrist. “Ten years of love–is that your justification for hurting her and disappointing her repeatedly? That love seems rather cheap.‘
“I didn’t!” Hitting his sore spot, Blake desperately grabbed me to explain, “Emily! Whatever I did wrong, I’ll change! Don’t abandon me, please… No one in this world loves you more than I do… You said you’d always stay with me, we’d never separate! What’s good about him? You’re happiest with me…”

He trembled, his eyes red, tears falling on my hand–the first time I’d seen Blake cry. Seeing his heartbroken appearance and hearing his belated devotion, my heart could no longer be moved.
It was oo late.

I looked at him. “With him, I don’t have to worry about the constant female friends around him, don’t have to force myself into situations that make me uncomfortable, don’t have to worry that my quietness will be interpreted as being a buzzkill. I can sleep peacefully and eat well. He makes me feel secure, relaxed, lets me focus on being myself.”
“Emily, I can…” He desperately grabbed my hand.
I shook him off and said calmly, “Blake, I would compromise again and again because I loved you, but when disappointments pile up too much, love gets blown away. I stopped loving you long ago. Don’t you understand?”
In that moment, Blake felt as if all his strength had been drained as he listened to the girl who once had eyes only for him calmly describing another man’s virtues.
Every word cut through his heart repeatedly, and though he opened his mouth, he didn’t know what to say since all words seemed ridiculous now.
He had lost–lost completely, with no chance of recovery.
