Chapter 5
Kate burst in just as all hell broke loose.
First, she gasped “Holy shit!”
Then she noticed my bleeding fingers, expression turned lethal. “You scumbag!”
She smacked Jason upside the head before he could even blink.
He glared between Kate and me, then noticed the movers filing in behind her.
“What the hell you’re doing?!” he demanded.
I smiled coldly. “Making room for your precious little Amber.”
“Though clearly,” I nodded toward Amber still sobbing on the floor, face a mess of bloody streaks, “that’s unnecessary now.”
I snatched a wrench from a mover and smashed our wedding portrait.
Glass exploded everywhere.
Perfect metaphor for us.
“Here,” I handed the wrench back. “Money’s in your account. Sorry for the wasted trip.”
“Everything was been tainted. Nothing here worth saving anymore.”
The mover looked alarmed but concerned.
“Need us to call the cops or something?”
Amber lost it from her spot on the floor.
“Call the cops? Are you fucking kidding me? SHE assaulted ME! I’m the victim here!”

Kate finally noticed Amber’s freshly decorated face and let out a low whistle.
With zero remorse, she snickered, “Nice makeover.”
“Well, look who stopped the pity party,” Kate jeered.
“Finally showing your true colors, huh?”
Amber shot her a venomous glare, wincing from her facial wounds.
“I never tried to steal your man, Lily! Why do you hate me so much?”
“You know what gossip does to a girl’s image!”
“YOU should know better than anyone!” Amber suddenly exploded.
“Jason told me everything!”
“You were assaulted before! You’re the damaged one who sees dirt everywhere!”
“AMBER!” Jason roared, finally stepping in.

“Shut up!”
Well, that’s new.
For once, Jason actually scolded his precious Amber.
Usually the script was predictable:

Saint Amber could do no wrong while I was the villain in every scene.
Hell, they’d probably blame me for the weather if they could.
I’d sometimes wondered…
Maybe Jason was just temporarily infatuated.
Maybe he’d wake up one day and realize his mistake.
Maybe I should wait for him to come to his senses.
Maybe I should forgive him, give us both another chance.
But I never expected my trauma to become Amber’s weapon.
Never thought Jason would hand her my deepest wound to use against me.
“You’re right,” I laughed hollowly.
“I am damaged goods.”
I’d made enemies saving Jason’s ass when he was kidnapped, and spent a night locked in a basement for my trouble.
What happened in those hours?
No one knows.
But people love their theories–that I must have been “ruined,” that I only survived by selling myself.
I’m human. It hurts.
I thought Jason was on my side. That he’d defend me no matter what.
The betrayal crushed my chest.
I could barely breathe looking at his guilty face.
“So, don’t make me think less of you.”
