I grabbed Kate’s arm and headed for the door.
Kate kept shouting as we walked: “Such a scumbag!”
“Absolute garbage human!”
“His entire family tree should’ve been cut down!”
The scumbag followed us out.
Jason blocked our exit with that desperate voice I’d waited months to hear:
“I didn’t tell her that!”
“Lily, I swear I didn’t!”
“You have to trust me.”
His eyes were wet.
“I never thought less of you. Never. Not once!”
When Jason reached for my hand, I yanked away.
“Talk to my lawyer,” I said coldly.
As he lunged after us, Kate nailed him square in the balls and spat:
“Rot in hell, asshole!”
In Kate’s car, we drove without direction.
Three hours of circling the South Side in silence.
Streets blurred past as memories flooded back.
My mother died saving me that night.
Later, broken and empty, Jason found an equally broken me, held me tight, and promised:
“Lily! I’ll love you like your mom!”
“I’ll love you!”
“Forever!”

A man with full pockets loves every skirt that walks by.
I refused to be that cliché.
Reality hit like a freight train.
He might not have physically crossed the line, but his heart had left
I should’ve continue when I first saw the signs.
“Harris’s law office. Now,” I told Kate.
Kate’s friend ran the most cutthroat divorce firm in town.
He tore through my evidence overnight and crafted a battle plan before dawn.
Next morning, we dropped our bomb at Jason’s company:
“I’m dumping all my shares.”
“Highest bidder takes them.”
The shareholders erupted.
Everyone in that room knew the truth: Jason was just a pretty face.
My family connections had built this empire.
Without me, he’d have crashed and burned years ago.
Jason burst into the meeting with a mummy–wrapped Amber trailing behind.
“Lily.”
He looked like hell–unshaven, rumpled suit, smelling of hospital corridors.
Must have come straight from Amber’s bedside.
“When does this tantrum end?”
“Have you considered what your withdrawal means for the company’s future?”
His voice dripped fake concern.
“How does this benefit you at all?”
I locked eyes with him.
“Either the shares go, or I divorce you. Your call, hotshot.”
The shareholders turned on Jason like sharks smelling blood.
“Listen, Mr. Miller,” the oldest board member cut in, “I don’t give a damn about your bedroom drama.”
“But when it threatens our company’s future, I feel compelled to weigh in.”
