Chapter 4
I stared blankly. Then laughed.
Pointing at Callahan, my voice icy. “You’ll regret this.”
Callahan barely glanced up as he tended Seraphina’s scratches. “Tomorrow’s Seraphina’s birthday bash. Seems I need to leash you to keep you in line.”
A maid approached with a studded dog collar. Seeing the blood pooling beneath me, her eyes widened.
She looked nervously at Callahan. “Sir… Madam… she’s bleeding…”
Instantly, the scissors flew, hitting the maid. Callahan’s smile was vicious. “Seems Elara bribed you well. Try again. Who. Is. Mrs. Thorne?”
The maid dropped to her knees, groveling towards Seraphina. “Forgive me, Mrs. Thorne! I misspoke! I’ll punish myself!”
She began slapping her own face, hard.
Seraphina whimpered, clinging to Callahan. “Maybe I should go… no one wants me here…”
The maid panicked. She snapped the collar around my neck. Kicked me. “Crawl! Now!”
She simpered at Seraphina. “We all adore you, Mrs. Thorne! Please stay!”
Seraphina smiled, satisfied. Callahan’s gaze never left her. Utterly captivated.
I was chained by the front gate. For a day and a night, I listened to their moans and laughter drift down from their room.
The next evening, guests flooded in. Callahan and Seraphina, the picture–perfect couple, greeted them, ignoring my existence.
Society women who once fawned over me now fawned over Seraphina. They stopped before me, sneering.
“Well, if it isn’t the former Mrs. Thorne! What happened? Get a bad haircut… guarding the door now?”
“Guard? More like a doormat! Lower than those canaries Callahan keeps!”
“Haven’t you heard? After she and her mom got booted, they turned tricks. Worn out goods. Explains why she never popped out a brat…”
The guys whistled again. One “kindly” tossed a piece of meat near me, his hand brushing my body.
“Looks like Cal’s really done with you. Want some real fun?”
Another jeered, “Why not? Cal’s trash is our treasure!”
Someone unlocked the collar.
Hands grabbed me, tearing at my clothes. Someone straddled me, ignoring the blood, thrusting. Lewd laughter surrounded me.
When I raised my head, I met Callahan’s cold, ruthless eyes on the second floor.
He met my gaze. Utterly indifferent.
Annoyed by the noise, he turned away.
I closed my eyes, despair complete. But warmth touched my cheek, mingling with my tears.
I opened my eyes. The man on top of me slumped over, dead, a knife in his neck. Blood sprayed my face.

Chapter 4
The animals scattered like roaches. In the dim light, a familiar face emerged.
I gasped. “You?”
Minutes later, inside, Callahan received the signed land deed from the Hollis family. He smiled.
Elara! Chained outside! Those bastards dared touch what was his!
Callahan stormed downstairs, ignoring Seraphina calling after him. A killing fury drove him. “Elara! I’m coming! I’ll…”
He burst outside. Found only a pool of blood… and a severed hand.
He saw what it clutched. His world shattered. He lunged, collapsing beside it….
